Harrier over Cherry Point MCAS, NC.

Featured Replies

I was stationed at Cherry Point for over 2 years and got to see the Harriers fly all of the time.  They were super loud when they hovered.

Sorry please move to screenshots.

Great shots, Todd. I never encountered the Harrier, but the F104G and that beast was noisy like hell too 😉

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Fine shots from the Harrier !

cheers 😉

Those are really nice shots, Todd! I like that subtle horizon tilt.

Beautiful shots! 🙂

Very nice Todd 🙂

Nice ones Todd!  I still remember my own personal airshow at Mt. Home AFB in the 80's when some Harriers came in for a landing.  I was the only person on the entire flight line and when they saw me they stopped in mid flight and rotated 360 degrees right above my head and then wagged their wings and landed.  I was in absolute awe.

Wow what a great experience!

Have you already had the pleasure to hear an F-35B hovering? 🙂

Here's another Harrier story:
When I was young, about 8 years old, we were on a campsite next to Keiheuvel airfield (EBKH) every year.
Also every year EBKH had big airshows with, amongst the many planes... Harriers! While EBKH only has a gras strip, they did land on the field. So, one day, the arrival day, the Harriers came in and I was so enthusiastic about it, that I ran towards them until I realized they aimed to land exactly where I stood. There I was, 8 years old, with Harriers hovering about 100 feet above my head. Boy, did I ran!
This was in the 70's. Such unsafe actions are not possible anymore these days.

See here for a Harrier landing on EHBK. Man, do I wish I had a good digital camera back then:

Never saw the F35 yet. When I was at CAX in 29 Palms Ca a F-18 hit a bird in the exercise and knocked most of one of the rear tails stabilizers off. They said the pilot was really shaken up and had to be sent to the hospital. I saw the plane after it landed.

Nice pictures, Todd...and interesting tidbits of reminiscence...here...!

I do recall lots of fun practicing VTOL (and Hovering) with JF's Harrier Jump Jet...in my virtual world ....
