Stutters over London

Featured Replies

Flying over London and I'm getting loads of stutters. Trying to land the Fenix A320 at EGLL from the east was impossible.

I went back with a less complex aircraft and it's really stuttery...almost to the point where it's unusable.

When I search Content Manager for "London", the following add ons come up:
- Discovery London by Asobo - INSTALLED
- EGLC London City Airport by Orbx - INSTALLED
- EGLW London Heliport by Microsoft - INSTALLED
- EGLL Heathrow by iniBuilds - INSTALLED
- Landmarks London City Pack by Orbx - INSTALLED

Have I doubled up by having Discovery by Asobo and Landmakes by Orbx both installed? Should I get rid of one?

Any other help or advice gratefully received. Strange thing is, it had been working fine and just today started stuttering.

64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz Corsair Vengeance
32GB GeForce® RTX 5090 Graphics Card

Well.........London is London!  I fly with a pathetic 1070 and i74790k with low - med settings (clouds High) and can barely scrap 20 FPS coming into inibuilds EGLL and its usually a stuttering mess.  This is also with all the bells and whistles deactivated via the iniManager program.

You haven't said what settings you run, or resolution or whether you are on Vatsim (FPS hog) or running offline live traffic and at what level (another FPS hog).

The Fenix is the most demanding FPS hogger in the sim as well (my opinion) so you are swimming against the tide.

Now of course if you could afford (or find) a 4090 like Chewwy here you could land with 60 FPS! (One day this will be me!!!)

Sorry my settings are in my signature and just assume people see them! I've got:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz
64.0 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Any help you can give is gratefully received!!

Those are your system specs, I can see those.  What resolution are you running at, and what settings are in your sim?  In my opinion the only way to improve stutters is to lower your settings or upgrade your hardware.  If you want smooth into EGLL flying the Fenix you are likely going to have to do one or the other.

Strange thing is, I've done quite a few approaches into EGLL over the last week and it's just started happening.

My system settings are:

Resolution: 3840X2160
Anti-aliasing: Nvidia DLSS set to quality
AMD fidelityfx sharpening: 170
V-sync: off
low latency: off
DirectX Version: DX11
Terrain LOD: 100
Off screen pre-caching: High
Terrain vector data: High
Buildings: High
Trees: Medium
Grass/Bushes: Medium
Objects LOD: 200
Clouds: High
Texture resolution: ultra
Anisotropic filtering: Off
Texture supersampling: 6x6
Texture synthesis: Ultra
Water: Medium
Shadow maps: 1024
Terrain shadows: 512
Contact shadows: medium
Windshield effects: ultra
Ambient occlusion: High
Cubemap reflections: 192
Raymarched reflections: medium
Light shafts: high
Bloom: On
Depth of field / Motion blur / Lens correction / Lens flare: all off
Glass cockpit refresh rate: high

32GB GeForce® RTX 5090 Graphics Card

Even the most powerful systems are going to struggle flying into London in a complex aircraft..... in 4K resolution.

(The last bit is probably the most fundamental)

If you use MSFS's offline cache, you could try deleting it.

I'm no expert because my PC is a complete potato but at first glance you are running 4k with a 2080ti - I'll let someone else comment on that who is running similar hardware but that might be pushing it a little.  Terrain LOD and Object LOD are next FPS hogs, you are running Objects LOD at 200, you could reduce this to 100.

Be worth a test, dropping resolution as well to maybe 2k see what that does for performance....

Texture synthesis at Ultra and Windshield effects at Ultra probably overkill as well.

Cockpit refresh at High is another FPS hit, drop that to medium.

You could also lock frames via Vsync at 30 - which assuming you can hit 30 consistently would give you a smoother ride.  Particularly coming into London your FPS will take a hit.

Another tip which I've found useful, if you have the freeware EGKK I would deactivate this if flying into London because its a massive FPS killer and sits next to London Heathrow, particularly on vatsim or running offline traffic because they are 2 of the busiest airports in the UK.

You definitely have some mileage in your settings without impacting visual quality.

Thanks. I've dropped the reolution and the LODs down.

If anyone has any other ideas of what I could bring back without sacrificing too much visual quality, I'd be grateful to know.

Thanks again.

Perhaps turning off photogrammetry and instead fly over London with autogen ?

Does this mean getting rid of Orbx London landmarks?

I don't know to be honest. but it should be easy to find out i suppose.

if it only started today then maybe it's the connection to the server or the server itself?

Also, are you using rolling cache? it might help when you revisit a place frequently

I'm so used to bad performance over London now I don't think about it too much. I can do a circuit around the M25 and it's not too bad but if I fly along the river I expect stuttering. I suspect it's ORBX not being optimised. It was one of the first addons they did for MSFS.

What is the MSFS default for London like (was it part of the world update)? I may get rid of Orbx London. I only fly approaches and departures from LHR so I’m not doing VFR over the city

London is photogrammetry so any scenery enhancements are (probably) redundant.
