March 31, 20233 yr Having recently disabled SMT in the BIOS I was wondering if I would see any difference in the performance in MSFS but so far I have noticed absolutely no difference. Has anyone got any views on this or done any testing who could shed any light on what their findings were and whether anyone has done any benchmarking? Since this CPU has 8 cores I was expecting to see a bit more smoothness or perhaps even a slight increase in FPS, though as it stands, I'm minded to turn it back on again unless anyone can persuade me otherwise. March 31, 20233 yr Never turn off SMT under any circumstance. Purchasing a CPU with SMT/HT and then disabling it, is like buying a high performance and then only use it in "ECO" mode. If you have issues with a specific application because of SMT/HT (which might happen), run it with a specific AffinityMask and get rid of the virtual cores, but let the CPU use its full potential otherwise. March 31, 20233 yr With my previous i7 4770K i left hypertreading off because it could cause slight stutter here and there, overall it ran less smooth with HT on. On my 5800X3D i have it ON, no problems. Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. April 1, 20233 yr When I first got it last summer, it gave me more performance with SMT off, but that was before SU10 and DX12. Now it doesn’t make a difference and in other games, hurts performance to turn it off, so I leave it on.
April 1, 20233 yr If you have heat, power or stability issues you may want to to turn SMT HT off. Also off will let you achieve a higher overclock. sp Edited April 1, 20233 yr by Sky_Pilot071
April 1, 20233 yr you cant overclock 5800x3d , well not easily anyway, its not about the OC its all about the V cache ROG Crossair Hero X670e , 9900X, TUF 4090 , X4 NVME's. April 1, 20233 yr Author Thanks for your input guys. General consensus then is to leave SMT on and don't touch the clock speeds. Running cool enough at the moment but may need to see how it goes in the summer. I've been reading that a few have had to undervolt a little to keep temps down, though as a result of the last couple of sim updates, I notice my temperatures don't seem to be getting so high (could be the cooler weather too).
