Thoughts on the Samsung Odyssey G9

Featured Replies

Title is self explanatory. Is there anyone who uses this monitor for MSFS? Interested in rumours I've heard about distortion at the edges(?) I would have thought this was only an issue if the view was too wide, or am I wrong? Is the loss of vertical 'real estate' an issue? Looking at incorporating it in  a new build of my sim. Cheers.

I have 2, an older G9 and the Neo G9, they're fantastic imo - there's a little bit of "curving" around the edges, but all in not really noticeable to me once you spend a day or so with the monitor. Great for simming! Just make sure you can drive them, there's a lot of pixels there.

Great, thanks for the feedback, appreciated. No probs with driving them, I have a 4K 43"  The reason why I'm considering this monitor, is because although I would really like to invest in a triple screen 32" setup, I'm not sure I want to sacrifice so much performance driving three separate monitors. So waht's the difference between the G9 and the Neo G9?

About a year ago I bought a new G9, but the previous version, not the Neo.

Within 30 minutes of using it, I had 27 dead pixels and 1 sleeping pixel. They appeared while I was adjusting the settings of the monitor to my liking.

Needless to say I returned it the day after.

I know this was an issue on some early models, but I thought they had ironed it out. And I was prepared for 1 or 2 dead pixels on a gigantic monitor, but not 27.

Blimey, so the new Neo G9, is different because?

I don't know honestly, I think it has a higher refresh rate. Not sure if it has the same panel.
But I believe the one I got was definitely old stock sold new. I got it at a very reasonable price.
I have not heard about this issue on the Neo G9.
And if you end up getting a bad one, worst case scenario is that you have to disassemble and put it back in the box and return it. It's a hassle but not too bad.
I'm sure 99% of them are fine.
It was amazing for the 30 minutes it lasted. 😅

To me, anything that smells like Samsung will only last three years if lucky.

Mini LED backlighting, so it's brighter and has better local dimming too.

I used a Samsung S4 Active every day for over 8 years. It was more or less bullet proof.  Some of my iPhone using friends had been through 3 or 4 iPhones in the same period.

possibly a bit of a side track here, but for the life of me I have no idea how one could even use this type of setup if one fly's airliners.  The interaction with cockpit switches and dials simply makes virt headsets a hard no go for me.  I have to assume this is strictly a very small aircraft VFR think only at this point in the development cycle.  Either way, please back to the main discussion.  Thanks

For me the wide view magnifies the immersion, the depth and speed perception is much greater when you see the terrain or objects fly by in the corner of your eye. That being said, I almost only fly GA or small turboprops, and always with a TrackIR so I can look around.
I think a common misunderstanding is that people think the ultra wide view monitors just takes a slice of the picture you see in front of you and cuts out the above and below. But that's not how it works, it just adds extra view on the sides that you can't see with a regular monitor.
Of course this all can be adjusted, but so far I've not been able to recreate the immersion other than in VR goggles, which is far superior on the immersion scale, but not sharp enough for me so far. Maybe one day.

Different use case.

Airliners are all about learning correct procedures, memorising the correct flows and programming the FMS.  Sure people jump  in one and hit CTRL E and proceed to fly upside down through the Eiffel tower but for most people, aside from maybe the gate at the terminal and the taxiways, the outside view is pretty irrelevant your head is stuck in the cockpit and then you switch to autopilot and probably switch to an outside view. For airlines VR  is sub optimal.

GA is mainly about exploring the world and enjoying the ride.  VR, if you can afford the entry price, is going to really enhance the experience.
