Is RTX40xx Frame Generation and DLSS 3.0 worth it for MSFS?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I have currently RTX2080 and I am considering RTX4070 due to its price/performance. Also, I am tempted to get RTX4070 because of FG and DLSS 3.0, is it really worth it for MSFS? Please note I only fly on 2k resolution, no VR and I am not planning to upgrade my CPU at the moment (perhaps next year I will join team red 😄).

Looking to hear for opinions,
Regards,

Hi. I went from a 3070ti to a 4070ti. FPS effectively doubled using TSS and FG (no blurring).  FPS on my rig now avg. 100+, settings mix of ultra/high. I have not been disappointed.

Frame generation doubles my frame rate absolutely worth it.

The improved smoothness is nice to have with FG...things like AI jets flying past while you're holding for takeoff look better.

There is a downside, though--you have to use DX12 for FG to work, and there's a nasty bug in MSFS' DX12 implementation that's been around (and apparently unacknowledged by Asobo) for going on a year and a half where the ground textures on add-on scenery are randomly replaced by blurry Bing photo tiles--it's really exacerbated if you change cameras to an outside view.  I've foregone FG because of this...I find DX11 at ~40 fps is a better experience than dealing with the DX12 bug just to gain the relatively small improvement in smoothness from FG.  Now if you're a VR user, that frame rate boost probably makes enough of a difference to make dealing with the tile problem worth the distraction.

i'm not 100% sure, but isn't FG not availiable in VR Mode? So no benefit there 😞

Ah interesting, I have been using DX12 for few months now, I also noticed this bug, at first I thought was a scenery bug but yeah makes sense what you say, kinda petty since I find DX12 since SU13 works very good in my RTX2080, kinda hard now to switch back to DX11 😞

It depends on the resolution you use, I have a 4070 and its 12GB VRAM is not enough in UW 3440x1440 at most 3rd party airports.

Unfortunately Nvidia being "stringy" about VRAM :(. I am using 2560 x 1440.

I do as well and with everything on ultra, I easily fill up my VRAM (16GB). But then, just reduce terrain shadows to 1024 max, texture supersampling to 2x2 max and fine you are (for 16GB VRAM). Visually not discernible to me to the ultra setting. There are some more options (see guides on YT and here on avsim) that allow to reduce VRAM even further without affecting visuals too much.

1444p FG with TAA on a 4090 doubled my FPS and it’s smooth as hell. The 4090 was the best hardware purchase I’ve ever made for flight sim.

Not sure--I'm not a VR guy.  Just speculation on my part w/r/t VR and FG.

I went from a 3090 to a 4090.

Worth every penny for frame generation alone.

I can run max settings with the Fenix A320 and only get occasional stutters at big hubs like Heathrow, LA etc.

These are not significant stutters to me, at least.

My monitor is freesync/gsync compatible but is only a 60HZ (4K)

With FG on, I maintain 60 FPS everywhere. It's such a difference to locking FPS to 30. Night and day.

I say go for it if you can!

FYI no FG doesn't work in VR, it has it's own interpolation techniques.
