RealTurb, ActiveSky and PMDG in P3Dv5

Featured Replies

I have all regional versions of RealTurb and also the RealTurbCAT. I fly exclusively PMDG aircraft (mostly the 747-800i) and I use ActiveSky for the weather. However, it seems for me that RealTurb has no effect and everything stay calm all the time. Would anyone who uses a similar setup with RealTurb working be willing to share their P3D, ActiveSky and PMDG FMC turbulence settings with me? I'm not sure whether I installed the Realturb correctly, for me it was basically placing the .dll files in a folder and activating them in the sim, but no idea whether this is the correct procedure since the installation guide its useless?

Best regards

Good question and one that I asked myself after installing the Europe and America's regions as well as the free Africa and Oceania.

I don't have p3dv5 installed anymore, but I recall it was related to the installation process, and changed after I followed the correct steps...

Not very usefull as a contribution to answer your pertinent question, but i'll try to find some notes I took black then and post here.

I tried the Africa version for v5 but honestly, I haven't noticed anything different to before.

To be fair, I have re-downloaded and will try again.

That flying on rails feel is my only real dislike of P3D. I try to overcome it with a combination of Active Sky + Chaseplane camera settings + Real Turb. You just have to experiment to get it to your likening. Real Turb does seem to give some results flying over mountains in some locations but how realistically I can't say. If I use too high settings in AS and fly into weather cells, I think things are a little overdone, so I keep my turbulence settings below 50%, usually around 30ish. Not having any feel from your desk chair makes the visual evidence of turbulence important to immersion.

I followed the FS Labs suggestions for their A320 series which I use with RealTurb. I don't currently own any PMDG products for P3D. I had the wind turbulence and effect higher but recently went back to the recommended suggstions which seems better for an airliner.

RECOMMENDED SETTINGS FOR Active Sky
Max Cloud Turbulence: 20% Turbulence Effect Scale: 20%
Max Wind Turbulence: 20% Enhanced Turbulence: Disable
Realistic thunderstorm up and downdraft rate: Disable

Thank you all for your help, jcomm that would really be helpful if you could find your installation instructions, since I still  believe that I did something wrong.

Really don't understand that comment. If I don't engage auto pilot it is one heck of a job to keep level. With AP engaged, I still get the turbulence effect from Activesky. No rails in the sky for me.

Well, what I recall, and I am actually about to reinstall it and 5.4, is that I had initially skipped the proper install of the previous versions.

I purchased Real Turb Europe P3D v4/v5 from Simmarket, and the Africa and Antartica downloads are free to D/L.

In the Europe version you find :

  • RealTurb Europe_1.0_P3Dv4.exe 6.88MB
  • RealTurb_Europe_v1.9_P3Dv4_P3Dv5.zip106.46Kb

  • RealTurb_Europe_v2.0_P3Dv4_P3Dv5.zip104.03Kb

and the first time I was installing only the P3Dv5 versions, BUT !, you must start by the v4.exe, and then follow the README in the 2 v5 updates to apply those over the original v4 version.

Same applies to the Africa and Antartica versions.

My point is it takes addon to get decent turbulence effect. What effect do you get without Activesky? Without action on our part flying on rails is what you get and even with the addon sit takes a little trial and error to get it to your liking.

Thank you jcomm, really appreciate! In this case I made the same mistake as you did! Unbelievable that they don't make this clear anywhere in an installation guide! I will now proceed according to your explanation!

Ah! Great - please let me know how it went ... and if you're finally able to "feel the shaking"  😁

P.S.:

Make sure you read the included "Readme.txt", for instance and regarding RealTurb Europe it includes:

"Installation
************

P3Dv4 AND P3Dv5 users
*********************
1) Copy the folder of RealTurb Europe, (by default located in your \Documents\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons), to your \Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons folder
2) Rename the folder to RealTurb Europe v5
3) Inside RealTurb Europe v5 folder, locate and DELETE RealTurb_Europe.dll file
4) From RealTurb v1.9 update zip file, copy the contents of P3Dv5 folder to your created RealTurb Europe v5 folder and overwrite add-on.xml when prompt
5) Run P3Dv5 and enable RealTurb Europe add-on when asked

P3Dv5 ONLY users
****************
1) Run RealTurb Europe v1.0 installer but instead of installing to your \Documents\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons folder install to your \Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons folder.
2) In your \Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons folder, locate RealTurb Europe folder and rename it to RealTurb Europe v5

Note: If you do not install into your \Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons folder, the add-on cannot be detected and enabled automatically when you load P3Dv5 and you have to manually add the path into P3Dv5 add-ons.cfg file."

It worked! Thanks a million for your help, jcomm

One last question: For the RealTurbCAT there is a seperate P3Dv5 installer, hence I assume it is not needed for this one to install the P3dv4 version first, correct?

Well 🙂 😕 I am really happy for you, but my results were, at least as far as I could test, rather .. I'd say... NILL ?

Yesterday I reinstalled P3dv5.4, my FSLabs collection, the iFly 737 MAX which also required FSUIPC6 for some of it's functionalities, and Active Sky P3D... Then I added the RealTurb Europe, Africa and Antartica extensions but in both Africa and Antartica I get an error during the install, it proceeds and apparently the rest of the process goes on as expected... I believe I saw those same error windows during install of Africa and Antartica popping up the other time I had installed RealTurb...

Problem is I went flying around LPPT, and then from LPPR to LPPT, and noticed no bumping at all.... Maybe I should search for worst weather scenarios before arriving to the conclusion that it is not producing any significant effects...

When P3D started it asked for the activation of the 3 extensions, so they did install and got activated in the XML I guess.

Well, a possible cause might be the fact that this turn around I followed the FSLabs recommended settings for turbulence scale (20%) while in the previous install I had it at AS defaults.

I followed the process word by word, first installing P3dv4 version, renaming the folders, then Update 1.9, and finally Update 2.0 and used the Lorby Addon Organizer to activate the .dll files. I use the recommended 20% turbulence scale in ActiveSky. A good airport to try it out is SCEL surrounded by the Andes on all sides or FACT which is notoriously very turbulent. Did two test flights at each of them, once SCEL winds were perpendicular to the mountains and I got severe mountain waves turbulence as expected, on the 2nd test flight, winds were feeble (4kts, no gusts) parallel to the runway and the same arrival as before was merely "flying on rails". You need a few test flights to confirm that it's working, I guess
