February 15, 20242 yr I really like my 7800X3D + 4090 setup with MSFS, temps are around 55C to 60C in a typical sim-session. I cool it with a Corsair H150i (360mm) although that's overkill... I run 32GB of G.Skill Trident Z5 (2x16 sticks) model# F5-6000J3040F16GX2-TZ5K which is/was on the QVL list for my ASUS Rog Strix X670-E Gaming Wifi 6E motherboard. February 15, 20242 yr CPU cooler is only good if the case temps are handled correctly. I have custom case fans 4x140mm that move air through the case as fast as possible. heat buildup in the case will defeat the best CPU and GPU coolers this will cause throttling after a time. Raymond Fry.

Have never seen throttling in 30y of this because yes good airflow. I use a Phanteks FT case which sports a large floor fan which draws in air directly from the basement thru a port in the floor below the case so it's always being fed with 60F air will helps a lot. My 9900K rarely sees more than 58C under load, on an air cooler. Any other changes need to happen besides lowering cpu voltage? I have a Noctua NH-U12A and under MSFS load average CPU core is around 64C with a brief peak of 70C once. Obviously these are totally fine but if it can be lowered w/o loss of perf all good. After getting memory setup correctly I haven't done anything beyond BIOS defaults for CPU performance. I disabled HT or SMT whatever it's called. Anything else you can recommend to improve performance w/o introducing instability? I had all cores on my 9900K at 5gHz for the first 3y, then reduced it to 4.9gHz and increased voltage a bit as I was getting some instability and lockup crashes. For my brand new build I have 5x140mm and 1x200mm case fans, and the Phanteks case came with a PWM hub on the back of the case. I connected the hub per instructions including setting each fan to PWM mode and Smart Mode, but the BIOS does not display each fan's RPM, while it does let me set them with the usual graph line w/ moveable dots to cross spin rate and temp it just doesn't display what they're doing. The same applies to the MSI Center app which supports the motherboard. That app lets me set Custom settings per fan in Smart Mode, as well as one-click options for Extreme, Balanced, Silent and Custom, and they clearly work indicating the hub was setup correctly I'm pretty sure. Can one see actual spin rates if you plug each fan into its own header? These are all 4-pin. This motherboard I think has 6 fan headers including the CPU header.
