Data Usage of MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

I have been flying MSFS 2020 for almost 3 years. I was never concerned about data usage before, I had 1.2 TB from Comcast, and it seems that I was averaging around 300 GB per month. Near the end of June of this year, I get a message from Comcast ( Now Xfinity) saying that I was about to exceed my allowance for the month of June. Since it had appeared that I was using about 1/4 of that amount, I figured there must be a mistake. I contacted them, and they assured me that my usage was accurate.

Then I went to MSFS data log, and after flying two 500 mile flights in the 777, it appeared that I was using around 30 GB of data in MSFS. Multiply that by 30 days. and I was almost at 1 TB, not including the Youtube videos, and movies and sports that I watch.

So it appears, that Xfinity had not been measuring my data usage all these months, for some reason, and in June, their tracking became accurate. So yesterday, I signed up for unlimited Data for about $30 a month.

The reason I am posting this, is if you fly a great deal, which I do, it might be wise to figure out how much data you are using, if your ISP has a data cap, make sure you don't go over the limit, because the charge can be quite expensive.

...and it's gonna get a whole lot bigger downloads (streaming) with MSFS2024, good advice to check & upgrade if necessary.

I have no limit, and a 200Mbps D/L max ... But I use msfs2020 with Bing and PG disabled most of the time, multiplayer not enabled either...

But that's me .. because I started working on large scale networks when x25 was still a standard... and it was sooo expensive that it marked my sensibility for bandwidth comsumption for the rest of my life, I guess 😁

Thanks for the heads up Bobsk8.   I just got Xfinity internet at my new house in Savannah GA after many years (20yrs with AT&T DSL ) in Marietta GA.  What a big difference with speed, I have the top speeds that they provide.  And I just checked my contract.  I did add the $30 option of Unlimited Data to my contract of 3-years.  I think it is well worth it!

Gross I'd die if I had Internet limits hehe

Also have a large family though with many devices

30 a month seems reasonable though - what is the down stream speed of that?

I have the Xfinity 1200 Mbps downloads plan called Gigabit Extra.  Whatever that means...lol So far it's been pretty good with minimal downtime,  only downtimes are when the weather is bad like thunderstorms and it is usually back up within an hour or so   I am a happy customer....so far!,,,,😇

Comcast doesn't limit data when there is competition. They dumped their data caps here when another ISP started installing fiber. And they lowered their prices to be $10 below the fiber company for the same speeds. They're scared. 😉
