September 7, 20241 yr Famous flyer V Antonov AN-2. One of the messages below the video says that when he was taken for a ride, the pilot flew it slowly forward, then stopped and flew it backwards, and then forwards again. I don't know if it was because of help from the wind or what? (The message was pinned so it's the first comment message). 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. September 7, 20241 yr Basic aerodynamics. If an aircraft is flying into a headwind it's speed over the ground will be it's airspeed minus the wind speed so for example if an aircraft is flying at 100 kts into a 20 kt headwind it's ground speed will be 80 kts. If you have an aircraft that can fly slowly enough and a strong enough headwind it can be flown in such a way that it is moving backwards over the ground, it is not actually "flying backwards" as it's movement through the air mass is still in a forward direction as it must be to maintain controlled flight. Apparently the AN-2 can be flown as slowly as 25 kts (albeit that it would be descending) so if it were flown at that speed into a wind greater than 25 kts it would be moving backwards over the ground.
September 7, 20241 yr Very interesting, it instigates the miracle of flight in me once again. Thanks! September 7, 20241 yr No guys, you're wrong. This particular Antonov used a gear drive with Reverse!!! 🤪 Jokes apart my ka-4 Rhonlerche once flew backward near a ridge on a really windy day 😁 Edited September 7, 20241 yr by jcomm Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
September 7, 20241 yr Flying backwards was a regular air show trick here in the UK in the 60s. I've seen a Lancashire Aircraft Prospector , Moraine Saunier Rallye , Pilatus Porter and a Wilga do the same. I'd love to see an MSFS Model of the Prospector..there used to be one to rent at Biggin Hill but it cost 4 or 5 times the cost of a C172
September 7, 20241 yr Well it actually flying forward by indicated air speed and backwards by ground speed lol Life time flight sim enthusiast, current airplane owner 172P (past C182F). September 7, 20241 yr I've flown a C152 backwards in the RW twice (slow flight with full flap extension into a strong westerly wind). It was fun to look down and see the terrain moving forward under the main gear. Randall Rocke
