Need some help! (FSX Gold Edition vs FSX SE)

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

Returning to the world of simming feels really nice. The last time I flew a flight in a simulator was 7 years ago in FS2004. To be honest, most of my FS9 payware and freeware addons are safely stored in my old hard drive!

But now the time has elapsed. With my new laptop, I am aiming to gear up with a new sim, probably FSX. But I am severely facing a trouble about which to choose - FSX Gold Edition or FSX Steam Edition. One of my friend owns the gold Edition but according to some reviews I found the Steam Edition was much better.

So I would like someone to please help me differentiate the pros and cons of both the editions as well as help me choose the best!

Thank you!

Looking forward to a speed reply...

(It's my first post, so sorry if I did something wrong!)

Both are quite old now.  You should consider going with MSFS 2020 or wait and get the MSFS 2024 in November if your getting back into flight simming. But if you want to go with FSX, then go with the Steam verison.  It, at least, has been updated a bit to work on more modern computers.

Thanks for a quick reply! My laptop may not be able to sustain MSFS2020 but I would surely consider it. But I had a query, is X Plane 11 a better consideration than FSX SE and can X Plane 11 steam Edition be played offline?

Agreed. Go with FS2024 for sure, even if you have to turn down settings it will look and most likely play way better.  Not recommended at all but If you HAVE to get FSX get the Steam version.

Before everyone keeps lecturing you about MSFS, can you tell us what are the specs of your laptop? That may help a lot.

Following are my System specs :-

Intel core i5 (12th Gen)

4GB RTX 2050 GPU

256GB SSD (But now only 97GB is free!)

1TB Extra HDD Storage

16GB DDR4 RAM

But the major problem is that I don't have a good internet service here. Actually I have a good WIFI connection in my home but as I am a junior doctor, I mostly have to stay in hostel of our hospital where there is no WIFI.

Fsx steam is cheap, easy and quick to install and MAYBE some of your fs9 addons might work with it. Don't bank on it though.

It will start up pretty quick on your system and won't EVER keep you waiting several hours while the devs force an unwanted MANDATORY update on you.

To actually answer your original post without trying to upsell you, I'd go with the steam version. I'd call myself a die hard fsx user (who uses p3d mostly and msfs occasionally and fsx for one plane only.)

The steam version has been slightly tweaked and works better out the box (ironically it's download only) than previous disk versions did (which I also own). Some here might argue against that opinion but good luck finding the boxed versions with valid serial numbers etc.

Fsx has the best flying lessons and missions imo of most sims and is great to learn flight simming on if you don't have a great Internet connection.

If you decide later to buy into the MSFS ecosystem you've lost little money wise going this route.

Good luck, you'll still find help here although you might need to be patient waiting for it!

I used to run FSX Acceleration, but with this computer, I switched to FSX Steam Edition.  I have no regrets about going to the Steam Edition.  It does run better, no need to tweak the sim's .cfg file, and the Steam Edition does a much better job of managing this sim's 4GB RAM use limit.  In other words, far less chance of running out of RAM and crashing to the desktop.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Yep, either FSX (Steam) or FS9 would be a good match for your laptop. If you use windowed mode, Lossless Scaling FG (which we've discussed in the MSFS forums) works beautifully with these sims.
