Which new VR headset to buy?

Featured Replies

I have been flying exclusively IFR for my training IRL so I haven't touched VR for over six months. I assume my beloved G2 is already dead. Is Pimax Crystal Light the only real option on the market?

I want to wait for the Pimax Crystal Super, but seems hard to know when it'll finally be out. Other headsets all appear to be flops, gaining very little traction / attention among users. What a draught for us VR simmers.

Wow, this is a hard one.  I guess I would suggest what's in my signature.😉

FS2020

Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

Just built a new system and moved from the G2 to the Crystal Light at the same time. To date, very pleased with the image quality using the Crystal Light (with prescription inserts).

I was initially disappointed with the comfort of the CL so I ordered the Apache comfort strap and face pad combo from Studioform. This combo package provided a huge improvement in comfort and the included face pad spacers allowed me to better accommodate my prescription inserts. Highly recommended! I also upgraded to the DMAS headset speakers. While an improvement over the stock CL headset speakers, not quite as good as the G2 speakers in my opinion.

System: i9-14900K, Asus ROG Z790 MB, 64GB ram, Samsung 4TB NVMe SSD, Asus ROG Strix 4090, Pimax Crystal Light

Hardware: VitualFly Yoko yoke, VirtualFly TQ6+ throttle quadrant, Thrustmaster TPR pedals, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS

Simulations: MSFS 2024 and 2020 (VR), P3Dv5.3 (VR), X-Plane 11.5 (VR), DCS (VR)

Right... I just pulled trigger on Pimax Crystal Light. Don't know how long it will take to arrive, two weeks?

Ordered this combo too. For prescription inserts, I just found the cheapest one from vr-rock which seems to ship from US.

One last question, how are you guys happy with built-in audio/mic? Especially the mic, since I'm using SayIntentions.ai all the time. DAMAS headset is out of stock.

Thank you guys for the help!

I never used the default sound option.  I opted for the DMAS Earphones (to me their on par and/or better than the Reverb speakers).  Concerning turn around time for your order, it took from 6/12 to 8/30 to get my headset. Hope your turn around time is sooner.🤞

I didn't like the quality of the stock mic. I too use SayIntentions for most of my flights so I opted for the Antlion ModMic USB 2 to replace the built-in headset mic. The ModMic comes with a magnetic mount that works well with my CL headset. I disabled the built-in mic through PimaxPlay. I used the Pimax in-stock email notification to purchase my DMAS headphones.

I sold my HP G2 on eBay. Somebody bought it immediately after I posted. And got a PCL. If you get a good one, you all will be happy. Mine was perfect on arrival.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Just got a refurbed Quest 3 for 400 Euro to get back into VR. The thing is working exceptionally well with Virtual Desktop in wireless mode. Performance and readability in MSFS are good and I am quite happy with the seamless transition from 2D to VR and vice-versa.

That's quite a high end mic for over $80, I was thinking about sth much cheaper, like a USB earbuds with mic, etc.

Yeah I love Q3 for video streaming Youtube from VirtualDesktop - nearly perfect, the resolution and edge-to-edge clarity are breathtaking. Unfortunately after testing it extensively in MSFS I found that streaming is just not the way to get the best VR picture quality. I decided to keep using G2 and that all my future VR headset must have direct input like HDMI/DP.

I had a G2 some years ago and find it the Quest more or less comparable. Of course it is not the best out there, hence the price. Once the 5090 is out, I might end up getting a better VR kit.

If you haven't moved to Win11 yet, you're fine for another year.
