On my previous system, I had the XBox app installed, although I bought MSFS via the Store..

On my new system, I do not have this app installed, and can fly MSFS 2020 just fine without it..

I have also pre-ordered MSFS 2024, and it appears ready to Open/Play in the Store.

Is there ever a requirement for me to install the XBox app?

I don’t know how you’ve managed that, the most minor issue with the Xbox app or authentication issue completely bricks my sim. 

Mine seemed to have disappeared also. Reinstalled from microsoft store so that I could use it to set up where 2024 would be installed.

My suggestion is not to mess around with this stuff - if things are working fine for you, either with the app or without, don’t try and make changes. 
 

Otherwise, if once you enter the loop of authentication hell, you will regret it!

I should add that it looked like I didn't really need it because purchase went fine, and it was in Store ready for release date. It must have been removed when I had to reinstall a few months ago. I just wanted it to help change 2024 install path. It used to be that without this program you couldn't do anything flightsim related, even just install. It was a real pain, couldn't authenticate as someone mentioned..
