FS2024: Reshade vs Nvidia Filters

I have been using GFE Details filter for years and much prefer it over HDR10 and the Details filter is also what I am using in 2024 now.   I also found problems with the NV app so uninstalled it and installed GFE from circa 10/2024 NV driver package, and it works great with or without NVidia FG operative.  Also, and this is critical in this thread:  there NEVER has been a performance impact in 2020 nor in 2024.   Do be aware the Details filter has several sliders within to find tune effects.

Yes, i always used the details, color and brightness filters with MSFS 2020 without a problem, but I was using GFE back then. It's probably the mix of Nvidia app, filters and FG that are causing the crashes in MSFS 2024. I didn't try it with GFE instead of Nvidia app yet in MSFS 2024, but I'm thinking about doing it. I still want to do one more test which is changing Nvidia app to "use the 3D application setting" in DLSS Override instead of "latest", which is what I have selected now. Will test it and report the results.

I've used Nvidia filters in the past (with MSFS 2020) and found that, for all their bloatware, they didn't improve my overall sim experience much (if at all) - just gobbled up valuable system resource

  • I used to love the way XP11 looked with a reshade preset. I would love a reshade preset that would make my msfs 2020 look like this: I find that REX ATMOS is the easiest one to use, but

  • Nvidia filters still don't work in 2024 with the latest driver, as soon as we try to enable the first one the sim freezes. Had to disable them in the Nvidia app. Hope they fix it in the next driver.

I guess you are thinking the App is a plus due to its DLSS capabilities, I mean setting Latest or what have you.  I did ample testing in preset K and found zero difference between it and DLSS4 default, which I believe is preset C.

Just tested and it didn't work. When I disabled and enabled FG again (it doesn't activate if I don't do that) the sim froze again. Now I will uninstall the Nvidia app again and test with GFE.

Hmm, looks like we can't install GFE anymore. The page doesn't exist and redirects to the Nvidia app. word not allowed.

You have to find an older driver that contains it which is how I managed to reinstall it. I have a copy of one circa 10/2024.

I found a link, installing now: https://us.download.nvidia.com/GFE/GFEClient/3.28.0.417/GeForce_Experience_v3.28.0.417.exe

Is this the version you have?

On the NVIDIA forums people are reporting the filters are crashing all games for them when FG is enabled, not just MSFS.

If this is narrowed down to the issue, that's actually good news. I have a 4090, but my friend has the 5090, and our experience is only related to these two games. Hopefully, it will get fixed. Do you have any idea if there is a workaround for this issue? What do people say or do?

Not near the sim machine at the moment but it was a fairly recent driver that I had saved, like around Oct 24

Using GFE instead of the Nvidia app worked! I can now use the filters with FG enabled.

If you mean a workaround for filters not working, yes, either uninstall Nvidia app and install GFE or keep Nvidia app and disable FG (which for me is not an option).

We will try, much appreciated.

I couldn't believe it but this morning, out of the blue, I noticed the GFE Details filter was not operating.   I spent a couple hours trying to restore this and never could get around GFE overlay no longer working, nor filters.  As a last resort I installed the latest NV driver AND the NV app again, and discovered how to use filters with the app.  I'm pretty sure what is happening is there is a fatal problem when any filter is active when you're on the Welcome Screen in 2020.  You can leave the filters ENABLED, but not have any filter actually active.  So when you launch into MSFS 2020 you can enter your plane and departure airport gate or what have you, then launch your flight into the VC.  THEN, you can open filters (Alt-F3) and turn on the Details or other filters and all will be well.  OMG I am so thankful because I could not get past GFE failing to load fully and I would get the infamous error code 0x0003.

So when you are ready to return to the Main Screen after completing your flight you must turn off all filters once again.

Shoot!  No Go!  Lock up once again with NV app install AND filters active or not doesn't matter.  So found a very old driver with GFE and after a thorough cleanout of the latest driver and NV app am back to GFE filters working again thank Goddess!  I have not found anything that compares favorably over the Details filter and without it just looks not good at all!  The driver was found at Guru3D and is 551.52.   The other driver from Oct 24 gets sabotaged during the install of GFE and kills being able to use it with error codes produced.  NV is trying their hardest to get people on to the App but it just does not work with 2020 yet.

What Reshade profile best mimics GFE's Details filter?
