May 27, 200818 yr Geofa, You have the most thankless job here (I know, I'm a mod too elsewhere in the flightsim realm), trying to be fair and maintain order and applaud your decision to reinstate Odaat and Professor. Do I agree with many of your decisions? No, but I understand them. I realize that ever since the release of the original FSX (pre SP1), people have been extremely vocal. They have every right to be po'd and I'd be to if I had bought 3k worth of hardware to run a game (unfortunately I'm deploying so it's late 2009 for me to upgrade my hardware). But...done constructively and maturely. There have been some measures put in place here in the last year that I have perceived as draconian in regards to FSX, and that's my opinion. You had cheerleaders and naysayers on both sides to include regular Joes and developers. I have seen very constructive posts from individuals unhappy/happy with FSX or ACES, or the MS marketing department only to have them beaten down by others here to include regular Joes/developers. What I PERCEIVED was Avsim dropping the hammer in the forums in order not to chase off ACES or MS, developers, etc. Avsim being more than a forum to include its store, charities and scholarships and interaction with the Flight Simulation community, to include vendors and ACES. Okay, I get it and understand why it was done. If I'm wrong about what I implied, just tell me. I've been tempted not to return here after reading several comments from members and posters alike. Phil Taylor is not infallible, FSX has split the community and things are far from fine. What do we do? Throw more money at it? I hope one day when I get back from Iraq and buy my new computer, I'll be able to run FSX full-tilt. But if I've dropped $3000 on a super system in 2009, only to have FSX run like a soup-sandwich, yeah I'm gonna be pretty po'd. Constructively po'd of course.Blake MelanconOlympia, WA Blake

May 27, 200818 yr Shame on you, you poor loser, get a life!!.We had this issue many times discussed in this forum. I you don't like FSX, get lost NOW!. You are not welcome here, they should throw you in the bin as a member. If you can not afford the hardware to get FSX smoothly running, you are definitely a poor loser HA, HAHA!!.Are you a kiddo??. Go far away, you stupid donkey, from here and let me not see you ever again on this forum, you are a disgrace. Show your name please!Best regards, MartijnP.S My post is mend for the starter of this post, the "poor me" person or beast!!.
May 27, 200818 yr >The only solution was to empathize with unhappy customers,>even to the point of admitting (possibly unethical) marketing>techniques were used. This may have been impossible for MS,>which sets us all up for conflict. Problems that did exist>were defined as "not problems". Marketing expectations that>were unmet were met by frustration rather than apology.>Best,>Bob>>Bob,I believe you have touched on a profound stink in this affair that, as we've continued to smell it, we've continually attenuated: the DX10 fiasco.ACES is chained to the mothership on this one and DX10 uptake, for whatever reason, has been a failure. When Bill Gates stood on a podium in 2006 and touted Vista and DX with an Alpha/Beta of FSX, we were led to believe that FSX would be a flagship for DX10. For many of us, thousands of $$$ later, DX10 and the promise of FSX utilizing DX10 has disappointed.Sure, sure, dead horse and all of that. But in these matters, you sometimes need to take the long view. MS/ACES introduced a large number of variables at the same time:1) SimConnect and other SDK changes; some of which broke things2) A major technology promise unfulfilled with DX10 (no matter how many months you "prep" people for a failure, the failure stands on its own).3) Public openness4) multiple service packs (we've only had 1 relatively small patch to FS9 previously)If this were a scientific endeavor, the introduction of these variables would have been more controlled. Thus, we have volatility. We can come on here and chastise ACES/Phil, or chastise those overly critical to ACES/Phil, but public engagement was bound to be fraught.Phil the person is just that, a person. Phil the PM at ACES will be the brunt of praise and criticism no matter how you slice it. Phil the person got tired, as would anyone. People like to iconify as it is easier to abstract an entire apparatus by manifesting it within one person or entity (the same happens where with Tom A.).In any case, the whole Vista/DX10/FSX thing was borderline unethical, but the fact is that it constitues a failure or shortcoming. When your parent company is one of the largest (IT or otherwise) and commands an extensive market share, you are going to get the gamut of customers when you open up to engaging them.Phil should have hired a community relations guy/gal and vetted through him/her. This person would be skilled in dealing with the tattered masses and would serve as a sanitizer both ways. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.Phil made the right move for himself, but I think the apologists should temper their vitriol against those who spoke out in challenge to ACES/Phil and/or criticized ACES/Phil. While some people have misbehaved, and while some have waxed sychophantic, getting it all out in the open has merit. Let's not forget that all of us gathered here, at places like AVSIM, are still the minority customer. In this light, we may not be "representative," but we are certainly among the locii of innovation for the series.Let Phil have a break from us and us from him, we may all gain perspective. Anyway, he's not disappearing, he's just adjusting the terms. You can bet your last dollar that he'll continue to lurk - the ACES folks have always lurked. May 27, 200818 yr wow...what a post!Do you realize the depth of thought that this thread has contained? People really digging in to understand new viewpoints, everyone being respectful. This post contains no depth whatsoever, and replaces thought and logic with name calling.
May 27, 200818 yr >Ryan wrote..."Why is it so bad to vent here?">Thirdly, it does little to encourage new flight sim enthusist>to participate in any meaningful way and thus DISCOURAGES>growth in this community. I remember a time in this community>when folks actually discussed flightsimulation, helped>newcomers, and showed respect to their fellows.Gee I dunno Ron.People like a train wreck. Traffic stops up to rubberneck at an accident.Conflict draws a crowd but then divides that crowd. Every major hobby has factions, infighting and volatility - hobbies are passion-laden as they are the means for a man or woman to (in most cases) escape their normal reality in favor of a reality of their choosing. The enormous dissatisfaction we sometimes see comes from the product not molding to the desired reality. You are right to point out that dissent is contagious - people will adopt a problem that is not entirely theirs if it resonates with their sentiments or, more importantly, if it "feels" like problems of their own.The only commonality amongst many of us is the "passion" for the hobby. Woe to the business facilitating the hobby. Flightsim is not just like any other game because it has hobby underpinnings.
