Opinions on getting a 7900XTX for triple 1440p (MSFS2020)

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I’m currently using a RTX 4070Ti and its 12GB of VRAM are definitely not enough for my triple 2560x1440 monitors in some sceneries.

I can’t afford a 5090. But the price of the 7900 XTX with 24GB has gone down a lot lately, and is pretty reasonable right now (~1000 CAD), in line with the 9070 XT and below the 5070Ti.

I’m on the fence, mainly between the XTX and the new 9070 XT. I know the XTX is almost 3 years old and a whole generation behind, but I’m worried about the 9070 XT’s only 16 gigs. I worry that I’d pay a grand to upgrade from 12 to 16 gig and not see much difference with my giant resolution.

I’ve read rumors about potential 24 or 32 gig cards coming from both vendors at the end of the year or early next year, but they’re just rumors at this point, plus I imagine the price will be way over the 1000 I’d pay now.

Curious to hear from others running the XTX, especially on a multi monitor setup. Is it worth it in 2025?

thanks!

Bert.

Hello Bert,

The XTX is absolutely worth it. That extra VRAM does make a difference, and I'm running mine for 2 years now on MSFS 2020 and 2024, and my experience has been great with very smooth rates. The XTX is a very powerful card and can handle anything you throw at it in MSFS 2024. I do not run multi monitor though, but on 40" ultrawide IPS A 155Hz.

Drivers has been rock stable.

Same here - got it for the extra VRAM. No regrets.

Thank you, both! I was mostly concerned about future-proofing, but given that it scores around the same as the 9070 XT & 5070Ti in non-RT settings, I guess it will work great for MSFS and other games over the next 3-4 years. I don’t really care about ray tracing or frame gen.

Funny. Overkill Simulations just posted a YT vid on this very topic. Check it out.

I had a 20 gig 7900xt and it was great until I upgraded to Win 11 when my computer shop could not get the drivers to place nice with Win11 at the time and msfs2020. So I replaced it with the 16 gig 5070ti and have been pleased with it. CPU is a 7800x3d.  This was my experience. Your mileage may vary.

I’ve been hearing of Adrenaline driver issues on Windows 11. Is that still a thing? Is it specific to the 7000 gen cards or universal? My last Radeon was back in 2005 😅

That was the Geforces with black screens etc. The Radeons have been pretty stable right through.

Unfortunately, not with my XT gpu. Again, your mileage may vary.

Update: got the 7900XTX. Holy molly the difference it makes vs my old 4070Ti!! I can finally put everything on Ultra and still get smooth frames across my 3 monitors (total resolution 7680x1440), using TAA without any frame generation. This is in add-on airports and the PMDG 737 with Vatsim traffic. I've seen VRAM usage go as high as 18-19GB, so a 16GB card would have definitely struggled.

Thanks all for the advice!

Opening an old topic.
I have the 7900XT with Ryzen 7 7800X3D, running triple 32" curved monitors in 1440p.
I tried to use the Render Windows in Experimental (MSFS2020) but the games freezes and crashes. Tried top use several different methods from different videos, but no luck at all. The view is awesome, till it crashes.
Temperature of the GPU remains below 50C, FPS low at 28-30.
Anyone has any idea where to look?
