Good news for GPU buyers in the US

Featured Replies

Hoping no new tariffs until after the big Black Friday sale in November in the US.

I'm glad I don't sell gpu's for a living. The unpredictability would make forecasting and pricing a challenge.

US delays gaming GPU tariffs (again) — gamers get three more months of breathing room | Tom's Hardware

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

It's actually quite predictable:

As long as trade policies are fair, there shouldn't be any further tariff requirements.

Why should trading policies be fair?  Open markets are a cornerstone aspect of capitalism.  The quest to provide products at a lower price to beat out competition which benefits consumers.

I’d love to go to nVidia and say “I want your GPU at a fair price, not the one you’re asking” … wouldn’t that be wonderful.  If consumers don’t want goods made in other countries then don’t buy them, that’s fair.

If you are really concerned about “fair trade” … stock market is about as unfair as can be and manipulated to leverage insider trading (which apparently is legal now) and those who are wealthy enough to change valuations and volume.

So the US doesn’t manufacture as much any more … so?  US was (still is in many areas) ranked highest in design and innovation (mostly on the tech stack) … this is in decline unfortunately and IMHO should be our focus to recover design/innovation and that means getting the population well educated with quality educations at affordable prices and not for the rich only … Standford $62,000/yr, MIT $60,000/yr … making the cost of education unavailable to most locks a population too menial labor rather than a well paying job that is rewarding.

Why would the US want to be another menial labor country?

The courts have deemed them illegal.

Well, heck, why should anything be fair as long as the consumer benefits, right?  That kind of short-term thinking is one reason why we're 37 trillion dollars in debt and almost wholly dependent on not exactly friendly countries for much of our critical goods like pharmaceuticals, rare earth minerals, electrical equipment, and on and on.

Let me ask you this: if tariffs are so bad, then why do so many countries have them?  Why did Europe have an 11% tariff on American cars, not to mention very high trade barriers and quotas on many imports?  Why do India and China have huge tariffs and trade barriers on imports?  I'll answer: because they clearly derive a benefit from them.  While we have gradually lost much of our industry, they have gained industry in part because of their unfair trade practices.

No, we don't need to start opening clothing factories again, but we absolutely need to make, farm, and mine stuff that is critical for survival, and tariffs are helpful in that regard.  Stuff made here will cost more, but it will be secure and will provide good-paying jobs.  We can either have cheaper imported stuff and remain vulnerable and weak, or more expensive stuff and be strong, safe, and secure.  We can't have both.

BTW, capitalism must also be reigned in and regulated just like anything else because there are always unscrupulous people who will exploit any system for their own gain.  The history of our struggle to maintain a balance between free markets and capitalism and protecting the people from fraud, price gouging, and monopolies is long and difficult.

OK guys, we're in the politics rabbit-hole once again.  There are plenty of forums where you can debate judicial fairness, trade policy etc...this is not one of them.
