I saw that video on YouTube yesterday. I'd hate to pull up to a gas pump in that thing.

Someone should do a similar video for a Starship launch :ohmy:

Here's an interesting comparison:

Average fuel consumption per hour per passenger:

Airbus A320neo with 200 pax - 15 liters

Boeing 747-8 with 450 pax - 30 liters

Typical private jet with 8 pax - 125 liters

There are app. 12-13 thousand private jet flights per day in the USA alone.  Bear in mind as well that many private jet flights do not carry their full passenger load, making them even more fuel inefficient.

Interestingly, we usually burn about 10,000 kg/h (2,500 per engine), which equals roughly 167 to 188 kg/min. He shows 860/min? Am I reading this correctly?

My car, road trip with a couple of friends: 1.1 liters (based on a trip to the hills last weekend). But don't expect me to get a good range or speed 😂

Jokes aside, how would these numbers look when compared by distance instead of time?

Well, the distance doesn't really matter when calculating fuel efficiency.  However, if you're talking about a short trip of, say, 100 miles, then flying would be even more wasteful and inefficient, as it wouldn't take much longer to drive that 100 miles and save an enormous amount of fuel.

What you're really doing when flying on a plane is sacrificing cost and efficiency for time, IE you pay more and use a lot more fuel to get somewhere faster.

Flying is extremely wasteful as it consumes too much of our precious resources simply for convenience.

An argument could be made that only a select few in our society, emergency and rescue personnel for example, should be flying at all.  Everyone else could use high speed trains if they want to get somewhere quicker, and use mass transit busses and trains for all other travel.  Ships could be used for international travel.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but it certainly seems that many people feel this way.  Whether they actually practice what they preach is another matter.
