Sepia mask removal in MSFS 2020?

Featured Replies

I've recently been flying the latest SU4 for MSFS 2024 and the night time lighting for the first time ever has blown me away.  Gone are the dreadful glowing fields.  I can't believe it took until 2025 for this to happen, but here we are.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to remove this from MSFS 2020?  It performs far better for me, and I would prefer to go back to it, but with the insanely good night lighting from SU4.

Do you have screenshots or video of the problem?

MS introduced this glowing sepia filter at night when flying at altitude, which they’ve thankfully finally removed from 2024 but I was wondering if they will from 2020.  There is discussion about the problem all over the forums.

I just wanted to see what you were seeing.

Seeing it is your topic.

Wasn’t 2020s sepia removed a long time ago?

No.  Around the Middle East it’s still all glowing fields.  I was hoping with the update to 2024, 2020 would be automatically changed but it still looks dreadful.

How is it in USA and UK?

Better.  Cities have somewhat more definition

Around Dubai in 2020 it’s just a mush of yellow freeways and glowing blobs.  I really hope they don’t use the SU4 improvements as a way to force us onto 2024.  It really does look so much better than this.

No, as far as I am aware (and I usually watch the Dev updates and all that, so I am generally aware of what’s going on with Asobo), they haven’t mentioned back porting this.

will they do it? I think they will, if it’s possible. That’s my opinion, but given that they have been steadily improving 2020 with new PG, the improved sceneries and more, it’s likely that they will.

Also I think these fears of “forcing us onto 2024” are overblown. Not because I think they are doing you a favour, but rather because the revenue stream is set up for it. By which I mean, the ongoing revenue from the Marketplace inside the sim. They’ve talked about how that’s doing really well, and so why would they stop you from using 2020? Keep using it, keep buying stuff on the market place.

At some point there will be a natural transition to 2024 just because more and more devs will move over, but as long as 2020 is pulling in enough revenue to justify keeping it going .. it will.

And I do believe them (as much as you can believe a public listed company) when they said it will live for 10 years.

Move to MSFS 2024. Problem solved. Case closed.

My thought was MSFS2026 would be released November 2026.

Edit:

MSFS2020 is working very well for me.

Funny, I watched the video on the SU4 night lighting and all I could think was "hmm, that's what my 2020 has looked like for ages..."

I certainly haven't seen anything like the screenshot above outside of a couple of bad server connections.  Otherwise night lighting in 2020 appears pretty good on my end even around NYC which traditionally DID have the poor sepia mask and blurry night lighting.  Not anymore.

I think it could be the Gulf States that seem to have this ridiculous filter everywhere.  I must admit, flying around Europe doesn't look as bad as in my photo.

If I really thought that we would be seeing an MSFS 2026, then I doubt that I would even think about switching to MSFS 2024. However, it is more like 2028 before we can expect the next version. I doubt that they are suddenly going to revert back to releasing new versions every two years.
