FSX Steam is unable to download real weather nowadays as the servers it connects to are missing. You will need ActiveSky or equivalent for that.

The only "crash proof" simulators are those that do not require an internet connection for license checking or for providing core services. Hope y'all have an "after the end" proof flightsim PC ready, with all your favourite sims from the stone age till the early 2010s (FSX SP2, FS9, B-17, IL-2 1946) plus a few current exceptions (DCS, Falcon BMS, FlightGear).

I believe DCS requires internet connection.

My xp12 sourced from Laminar is not accessing real world weather. I'm using a beta version for the wx radar which is quite good. Also my beta version is CTD on start up.
