Meta Quest 3 128 Gb

Featured Replies

Hi ,
Does anyone here use the mentioned VR headset with x-plane 12?

This is the only one in my budget, but would help if someone can shed more light

  • ... but if I look at your computer specs, which are in your signature, I don't see much use for VR.  😕

  • You want at least a connection of several hundred mbps to link the PC. Glitching means the connection isnt fast enough and you get compression artifacts, for me that meant wifi 6, the okder "5ghz" wif

  • I am now on USB 3 its way better, that Cub cockpit looks sweet.

I don't use it, but I can tell you the Quest 3 does work with X-Plane 12, but you’ll need to run it as a PC VR headset rather than standalone. The simplest way is through the Meta/Oculus PC app with either a Link cable or Air Link. Once you’ve got the headset linked, start X-Plane and the “Enable VR Hardware” option in settings should activate.

A couple of tips:

If the VR option is greyed out, it usually means Link isn’t properly engaged on the headset side. Make sure you’ve accepted the Link connection inside the Quest before launching XP.

X-Plane 12.1 and later have an OpenXR option that often works better than forcing SteamVR, though both can work.

Performance will depend heavily on your PC specs and how high you set the render resolution/refresh rate in the Quest software. A wired Link connection is usually smoother than wireless.

Some people also use Virtual Desktop for wireless, but it’s a bit more setup-heavy.

So yes, Quest 3 in X-Plane 12 is definitely doable, just expect to spend a bit of time dialling in settings for the best balance between visuals and smoothness.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.  What I said applies to the 3S as well, but with a couple of caveats. The setup is basically the same.  You’ll need to use the Meta PC app with either Link cable or Air Link, and once the headset is connected properly, X-Plane’s “Enable VR” option should light up.

A few notes for the 3S:

If the VR option stays greyed out, it usually means Link wasn’t fully initialized inside the headset before launching X-Plane. Make sure you accept the Link connection on the headset side, not just in the PC app.

The 3S has slightly lower specs than the full Quest 3, so you may need to dial back render resolution, refresh rate, or visual effects a bit sooner to keep things smooth.

X-Plane 12.1 introduced an OpenXR mode, which often runs cleaner than forcing SteamVR, but you may still need to experiment.

Be aware Meta has had some firmware hiccups with the 3S.  Nothing to do with X-Plane itself (AFAIK), but it’s worth keeping your headset software updated.

So yes, the same process works, just expect to do a little extra tinkering with settings on the 3S to get the best performance.

So basically the same, just wondering if it will be clear compared to the quest 3

Pretty much the same, yes. The main difference is that the Quest 3 has a sharper display and slightly better optics, so you’ll notice things look clearer in that headset compared to the 3S. The 3S will still work fine with X-Plane, but you may need to be a little more conservative with settings to keep performance smooth.

Yes, I'm using a 3S with Linux using ALVR

Its phenominal

You will need to get a wifi 6 router, anything less wont work.

Buy the 3 rather than the 3S. Its worth it, the low quality cameras in the 3S dont ruin it completely, but you will wish you spent the little extra to not be sad.

You need a pretty high end GPU, Im still on an RTX3070, you really want better than that.

I have used a WiFi 5 Mesh system for over a year with my Quest 3 without any issues. A recent upgrade to WiFi 6 and has not led to significant improvements. One thing is certain, though: using VR without cables is much more practical and comfortable!

Having 6ghz band wont help unless even your system is 6ghz capable, 5ghz is pretty good and it being close to the system its great

For meshing  unifi are great but very expensive, we use it at work or the aruba. Ones

And for me the extra price was too much to pay for a few better cameras, which is the only real difference between them.

I realised after the fact the extra is a small price to pay to be able to see clearly with the headset on.

Especially when the headset is so good I have no intention of upgrading it any time soon.

It might be enough, you can get a new wifi6 for around $60 if not. The router I had before couldnt hold a stable connection.
