October 7, 2025Oct 7 Seeing a picture of a chess set like this somewhere, before the internet, you might wonder why disheveled and bearded Hannibal (far right) has a male co-regent standing by him, with slick, straight hair. . The internet will quickly tell you that it's "Hasdrubal the Fair" who was his famously handsome brother. And who also crossed the Alps down from Spain with elephants and an army, with the idea of joining their two forces. Rome had not lost a single battle for two centuries before these Northern Africans showed up in Italy. (I happened to receive this chess set a few days ago as an early Christmas present. And wondered about the ID of guy with the ornamental spear). The other side (Scipio leading Rome), instead of an elephant for a shooting platform, has a portable repeating crossbow called a polybolos invented by Philo of Byazntium about 50 years earlier. I had to google that to see what that thing was.
