Hmmm, been considering it for my nephew 🙂

He wants to try a combat flight simulator, but nothing sophisticated - he's 11 yo

I played played it for a good while and it was really adictive even if the flight dynamics left something to be desired OFC...

(ofc this would be more interesting if the investment budgets and tech were on equal footing, but ho-hum) It's nice to see alternate ideas for flightsim. And a substantial evolution from the FS2000 days, I started from.

I like all simulators, but I hardly invest any money in MFS because without offline mode it's a simulator with an expiration date.

The day Microsoft decides to shut down the sim, as it did with FSX and Flight, whether it's in 2024/2028 or 2032, you'll be able to see the torches from the moon.

At least with Falcon BMS, DCS, and X-Plane, I know that what I buy is mine.

War thunder is GREAT when you’re away from home on a trip.

I guess one could argue that traveling with a controller allows sim use, but I’ve never gotten to the point where I enjoy using them for “serious” simulation (except for front-seating the AH-64 Apache in DCS 😎, but that’s not flying, anyway…).

IL2 is also playable with mouse/keyboard or controller, and is a great experience in energy management and aircraft handling.

The new Flaming Cliffs F-5e is arguably an excellent choice. Very fast, Very easy, very cheap, with the added benefit that it flies quite well.

sure - WT is totally free to Play, and can be a good experience, but…

FWIW, my kid started flying XP when he was 11. He was into airliners, not combat, and he was highly self-motivated.

I.e., they have the intellect to handle all the switchology, so don’t assume he needs training wheels 😎

DCS and XP still require activation and periodic re-activation.
so if they ever decide to close up shop, it’s still Game Over.

the good news is that, unlike MS, ED and LR don’t have any businesses that don’t revolve around their sims, so it’d have to be a catastrophic event(s) to make them go dark.

If you happen to own both MSFS 2024 SU4 and X-Plane 12.4, then you are living in totally blessed times.

Well, I’ve got DCS World and Prepar3D, too, so I must have ascended to nirvana! 😁

all I have to do to remind myself why I keep using XP is as simple as flying the landing pattern with real weather enabled. I’m still waiting for something to get me closer than that…

Nothing that a small patch can't fix. I've been a Stadia user and I've already learned that paying for services in this world is a mistake.

My concern with MSFS 2024 is that they become SAAS and charge an annual fee like iRacing in the car sim world. Microsoft loves the annual pay model. It is great for cash flow.

I’m not debating the services aspect (and, arguably, everything’s a service - it’s just a matter of the frequency of billing).

and, Who’s going to release the patch…?

the only reason we still have Falcon is because the source code was leaked.

what if LM decides they don’t want the trouble of supporting a few thousand Prepar3D consumer simmers any longer?

Once again, we’re SOL if the licensing servers aren’t available.

this is private IP we’re talking about, across the board. If there’s enough value in writing a no-license patch, there’s enough value to charge for the product.

They arguably charge a quadrennial fee now 😉

I mean, who among us aren’t going to eventually upgrade to the latest version of any given sim?

I have FSX, XP 11, and P3D 4.0.

While I do miss a few addons still trapped back there, I just don’t have enough interest, or time, to give them any attention vs the new sims.

we’ve come to expect (demand) a constant flow of new/improved features, even within the same release version. That all takes paychecks to make happen, so I don’t see how it’s possible to keep games available and running without some type of ongoing fee. E.g., how long will MS keep 2020 running in light of all those fixed monthly costs?

There will surely be hundreds of volunteers to remove those kinds of patches whenever and wherever necessary 🙂

I'm now fully focused on DCS, deciding which module to learn. I found a great deal on an A10 throttle stick, which is my excuse to come back, haha.

I’m not qualified to know if those protections could be cracked - I guess it would come down to how serious the various companies are about anti-piracy…

In re DCS - welcome back! The A-10 is a fine bird 😎, and the systems are amazingly sophisticated - I can hardly imagine what they’re like on the latest versions. So, yeah, a good HOTAS is key to getting the most out of it. 😁

I came to DCS shortly after the launch of the Hornet and IIRC, just a bit before Tomcat, so that’s where I’ve spent the vast majority of my time - there’s just something irresistible about aircraft carriers 😁
