The clue is in the question 👀

You say L gives better image quality than M. Is this sure - I've seen opposing statements. In my setup, I cannot see a difference between L and M when using DLAA and FGx2. What' is the best way/situation to see what's the best quality? I'm not chasing for fps.

If your browser search engine is Google, then type in the search bar (This should help you to verify)nvidia dlss presets does L or M give the best performance in fps? Then click the AI symbol for Google's AI's answer.

I had never asked Google AI that question until right now. My statement of M performing better fps and stability than L, and L providing better graphics was based on IslandSimPilots video.

I have never tried L. Because when I installed the new Nvidia driver and then the new DLLs and selected preset M, then my performance was greatly improved. I used to use 125 for both LODS. Now I use 200 and 160 for the two LODs and get the same fps as before.

Of course when I made changes something else might have caused these improvements, one test doesn't prove it is always true for everyone.

In other words, I'm reluctant to change anything now, even briefly for a test. Because msfs2024 is performing better than it has ever done.

One key for me was to turn on the text display with DLSS Swapper at the bottom of msfs. To verify which DLSS and which preset the sim was actually using. I found out that just because I had set something in Swapper did not mean the sim was using those settings. Because the changes have to be done in the correct order right now. Later on Nvidia app may update and make the order unnecessary.

I had to change the order i was making changes until finally the text said 310.5.3 and preset M.

That's what I got from chatgpt:

Here’s the MSFS 2024 + DLSS 3.10.2+ (Swapper presets) summary for best image quality / least artifacts, on your RTX 5090 @ 3440×1440, using DLAA or Quality:

What to use

  • Best overall: DLAA + Preset K

  • Next best: DLSS Quality + Preset K

  • If you still see ghosting (glass cockpit text / props / thin lines): keep DLAA or Quality, but try Preset M (many people find it reduces certain ghosting patterns in MSFS 2024).

  • Avoid Preset L for your case: it’s mainly tuned for Ultra Performance / extreme upscale and often just looks softer at 3440×1440.

Sharpening setting in MSFS 2024

  • Go to Options → General Options → Graphics → FidelityFX Sharpening

  • For DLAA/Quality: set it to 0 first, then 10–40 if you want a touch more crispness.

  • Don’t judge DLSS presets with sharpening at 100–200; it can create halos/shimmer that looks like DLSS instability.

After some experimenting I'll stay now with preset M (310.5.3 / 591.86). Though, I'm not yet convinced what is the "best" preset in terms of image quality.

Yep. J and K for best performance. L and M for best images. I use M.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

I've now tried all the options and presets and for me, v3.10.4 with preset K using 2X native FRG and DLAA still gives me better visuals and performance than with all of them.  Other systems may see different results of course.
