About Curling...

Featured Replies

As a long time skier in my earlier years I've always been a fan of the winter Olympics.  I watched everything from hockey to the slalom.  Sometimes curling would be on and I turned it off.  I figured I might as well go sit on the porch and the grass grow,

But this year I took an interest in it.  There's a lot of physics involved with bodies colliding with bodies at various speeds to accomplish goal.  And a lot of strategy involved in figuring it all out to your advantage.  Which way to curl the stone.  Attaining the correct release velocity.  And your team mates 'sweeping' the course to steer the ball to the exact spot you want it at the proper speed to wipe your opponent's stone or stones out of the circle or to delicately position your stone in the exact place you want it.  One misstep can cost you the match.  The players are extremely skilled at what they do.  I wish I had given curling a look years ago.

Last night I stayed awake longer than usual to watch the US women's team versus the Danish women's team.    The American team came from behind to win the match.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Welcome to the dark side...lol.   Curling is like golf, you have plenty of time to go to the kitchen and make breakfast, or a coffee and cookie.

Once you get into a game, the strategy and skill is amazing...and unlike figure skating dance you have clear points system and rules that are understandable.

I don't know what it is about curling, but it's almost mesmerizing.
