Pop Ups are Annoying, but…

Featured Replies

…pop ups with audio are egregious. I was on AVSIM last night looking through the forums when I scrolled past an ad and it suddenly started blaring audio and woke up my wife sleeping next to me. I understand the need to monetize a popular website, but you guys have to keep user experience in mind, you know — the same users that allow you to monetize this site. In the last 6 months I’ve watched Avsim go from one of the darlings of flight sims websites to what is essentially a tabloid website. I was willing to put up with it until you guys started including ads that turned your audio on. Not cool. Do better. Be better. Be like you used to be.

Not only that. The video ads _always_ are right above the "mark site read" and "unread content" buttons. I think I will track which companies these ads are for and make sure that I never buy anything from them.

I don't see adds on Avsim. None. Maybe because I browse on a desktop computer, not a tablet/phone.

Firefox browser (because Google/Youtube does not own Firefox like it does Chrome), Addblock Plus add-on (free), Ghostery Addblocker For Privacy add-on (free). Also never a single advertisement on Youtube.

It is unlikely Chrome will ever have an addblocker that works 100% on Youtube. They own Youtube.

Firefox is a full featured browser.

I browse Avsim almost exclusively with my iPhone using Safari. I use an ad blocker called “1Blocker” which is 100% effective. I have never seen an ad here even once.

We had this discussion recently.  Things seem to change not just here, but all over the internet.  I never used to mind reasonable ads, but now they are everywhere.  In between posts, playing audio, etc.  Again, it seemed to happen to many sites all over.

Basically, get an ad blocker.  On Chrome I use Ublock Origin Light.  Free and simple, haven't seen an ad since.  The only strange thing is sometimes you see empty space where the ad is.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!
