Hmmm, 2024 LOD.

One reality I find remarkable in both 2020 and 2024: changing TLOD makes so little difference between say 100 and 400 it's flat out not worth the performance load. In a double-blinded test I'm certain most would not know whether they were set at 100 or 400. It's just too subtle.

I would be interested to see a real world test of that. I am always reluctant to reduce my TLOD from the 250 that I had it set to in MSFS 2020 on my old i5 7600k powered PC!!

I would happily bet on that test outcome. I'm talking about a test where one does not know what TLOD is set at, not a test where the scenario is changed back and forth between 100 and 400 so one can compare. I've done this myself many times in the same flight and I have very sharp details and it's so subtle it's virtually negligible. And again, the processing demand just outpaces the visual change so much it's essentially moot. That is just how I see it maybe others see it differently. I was always struck by this from Day One in 2020 and it persists today in 2024.

Then try it in mountainous terrain and you will see the difference right away.

Rocky, what behaviors that you find irritating are you referring to w/ regard to 'rather aggressive LOD system...'? You and I have nearly identical hardware and while one can see some 'pop-ins' overall I don't see anything more than that and my brain simply ignores these in large part, hence the 'irritation' piece is largely eliminated. Hi Noel, I have noticed what I see as very aggressive LOD behaviour, sometimes, when on final, many of the objects are loading literally almost beneath the aircraft. Trees, fences and other objects. Only today did I fly into an airstrip, NZA Wanaka region, and literally the grass and trees were loading wihtin fifty feet in front of the plane! I've tried changing the in sim LOD settings, but it doesn't appear to make much of difference.

I have and live near the Colorado Rockies Front Range. Yes, I can change TLOD on the ground and notice a difference depending on exactly how far away and angle and perhaps also how a particular scene is created, but it's really not that different at all, just discernable in large part when you effect the change in TLOD comparing 100 and 400. But if I were flying into anywhere including mountainous regions, double blinded as to TLOD's setting I'll bet it would be very close to 50% correct guess. And most importantly of all: relative to the performance burden? Just moot, irrelevant, not worth concerning oneself with. Just my honest POV.

You and I have nearly identical hardware and I do not get that behavior. I may get some pop in during taxi but since installing a fix for taxiway signs it's improved quite a bit. Maybe it's down to streaming bandwidth or something else but absolutely I do not get what you describe even into the most complex airports. And as I think about it maybe it's down to exactly how we configure the sim to to run. For me it's normally 60FPS-fg via NV DLSS FG, front-edge sync in RTSS w/ passive waiting enabled. Perhaps other configurations force the sim to prioritize aggressive LOD.

I fly in the Rockies at FL 400 and can see no difference between LOD 100 and LOD 400.

Sure, I'm new to 24 and have followed some settings suggestions. I think tomorrow I'll spend some serious time and do some testing. Thanks Noel.

I noticed last night that the textures on the cruise liner docked a short distance from BIAR Akureyri are not visible when I am at the 01 threshold. The ship is on a direct line through the end of the runway. The textures pop into view when I start the take off run. This was not the case in MSFS 2020, so the LOD culling definitely seems to be a bit more aggressive in MSFS 2024. That cruise ship should be rendered in full detail at all times when I am at the airport dry

Well at FL400 it is harder to see the difference. Try FL200 and you will see the difference.
