  1. "Everything RealAir does is first rate."Absolutely true! I have the Spit, and is stunning!! The Fligh1 172 I don't like too much though, it just feels way too stable!About the circuit...My check starts at 300 agl. First, Fuel pump off, Ps and Ts in the green. 400 agl look left, center, right for traffic, 500 agl begin crosswind turn ( in Aus you are not allowed to turn below 500 agl).Bankstown circuit is usually busy and full of 152s. So in the Archer its a steep climb to 400 agl (usually takes about 15 seconds), shallow out the climb cut a bit of power and extend the upwind leg to around 700agl to maintain seperation.Like Jim says, there is no target altitude on the cross wind. Depending on traffic, I reach 1000agl just before turning downwind. I have been forced to extend my upwind to 1000agl several times due to slower traffic. On the "Trauma"-hawk and 152s there is a very short crosswind leg, usually only reaching 700-800agl, any higher than this and I would be too far from the runway. In the Duchess it's just a continuous Rate 1 turn from Upwind to Downwind, things happen really fast in this 1!!End of downwind (when runway is at 45 degrees behind the wing), It's Carbi-ON and power @ 1500rpm then maintain the nose attitude while turning onto Base, Speed will bleed from 110 down to 80 on Base, 1 stage flaps, at 650agl begin turn onto finals (again, in Aus we are not allowed to turn below 500agl). On finals second stage flaps, Third stage only when y r sure you are going to make it.Bankstown can be quite tricky due to it's 3 parallel runways, and speed management is crutial! If you leave your turn onto finals too late, and you are slow, you risk entering a spin due to the urge to over bank the turn to avoid crossing finals. 2. " Is it to assist with the pilots ability to generate enough back pressure on the yoke sufficently to rotate and lift off? "Yes, and this also has to do with the weight and balance. Say you load your B200 to its maximum forward limit. The aircraft is going to be nose heavy, and would require alot of back pressure to rotate. To reduce this pressure you give it some positive trim.I'm taking a guess here... but I think the reason the B200 won't rotate unless trimmed for T/O, is because the author has tried to simulate the pressure a pilot would feel on the controls. I read another post on trim where a CRJ pilot had purposely taken-off with an incorrect trim setting. He said that this wasn't putting his aircraft in any danger, but because of the pressure required to maintain climb attitude, it was a real pain to get into the air. When I'm in the circuit doing TnG's with the Archer, on the approach I like to trim so that I need to maintain a little back pressure on the control which for me helps on the flare. Once I take-off again I usually don't trim until I'm on climb. As I rotate and settle in to my climb speed and attitude I need a fair amount of back pressure because the trim is not on T/O config. 3. Hi CowlFlapsOpen,The trim doesn't affect the authority it just relieves pressure. If you take a look at a B747, B737 or any other airliner in FS you will see that it doesn't have trim tabs. When setting the trim on these planes you are simply changing the angle of tailplane.Edit: I just had a look at the tailplane of a 747, and noticed the elevator is split in two. Anyone know how this works? Also whould like to ammend what I've stated above. By adjusting the angle of the tailplane, the effectiveness of the elevator is affected. The Tomahawk has a spring-loaded trim instead of the trim tab. The spring is tied to the yoke. When you adjust the trim wheel it adjust the tension on the spring, which in turn moves the Yoke back/forward (you can see the yoke move inside the plane, and you can feel the tension on the wheel as you reach max pitch up/down setting).Elevator Authority on small GA aircraft usually happens at around 35-40kts, higher for T-tail aircraft, so by the time you reach rotation speed you have more than enough elevator authority. In real life, I find that the C152 is the only plane that will climb on its own with trim at T/O position. The Duchess, Archer, Warrior and Tomahawk usually needs a few spins of the wheel down from T/O setting to climb unaided. If you need so much trim to T/O on the B200, you might be a little nose heavy. Try and adjust your weight and balance.Hope that helps :D Have a great Day/Night where ever you are! :-wave http://www.3dflite.com/dac/img/BANNER-soccer.gif Student Pilot - YSBKC152/Tomahawk/Warrior/Archer/Duchess66.3 hrs Total
  4. Hello all. This is my first post here...Photos are from a flight taken a few days ago by me and a friend of mine with two c152's. The flight was planned for Bankstown to Bankstown via Mudgee & Bathurst. The plan had to be changed due to engine problems with my friends 152.Taxiing to RWY 29R. The Archer holding short is the Archer I usually fly. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151243.jpgSt Marys. My friend's 152 started having problems from here. I circled around to get behind him and keep an eye on him. While he sorted out his issues, I quickly worked out a new track to Bathurst and passed it on to him. Neither of us could get a fix on the NDB.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151250.jpgWe found an engineer at Bathurst to take a look at the engine (top left: testing the engine, to right: My desk, main: Departing overhead, Bathurst)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151251.jpgThe flight back to Bankstown was uneventful .http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151252.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151253.jpgI hope you enjoyed the photos :D Have a great Day/Night where ever you are! :-wave http://www.3dflite.com/dac/img/BANNER-soccer.gif Student Pilot - YSBKC152/Tomahawk/Warrior/Archer/Duchess66.3 hrs Total
  5. I'm glad you are enjoying the lessons!"the first is the trim, i think i understand the principle behind it if you set it up correctly then its like someone else having hold of the joystick9 but its centred)?"The trim does just that, it relieves the pressure on the controls.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151242.jpgThe control position image is just a way to show the pressure you need to apply to the control to maintain the elevator position. The greater the gap, the more pressure required.Basically, the air flow hits the trim tab forcing it down, in turn pushing the back of the elevator down. It works like the aileron. When the aileron is deflected up, it pushes the wing down."I dunno if im been a bit heavy handed when im setting it in FS but i seem either to clim or decend i cant like make it stop at a constant rate, is there anything im doing wrong? "I made a reply to another post in how to trim for straight and level flight.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=2470&mode=full"Also is it the VOR Panel again after doing the tutorial I still dont really understand this, do you know of any other tutorials or could some one explane it in a different way to me."Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking... 7. Not sure how accurate my recollection is but I do recall reading an article about the 767-400 flight test, which said something about the roll rate. I believe it said 7 seconds to reach 45 (or 60) deg of bank. Please correct me if I
  8. "I know folks are trying hard to come up with a counterexample - wish you luck."Not trying to come up with a counterexample. I know a Navajo ain't a 777, but multiple-engine loss is multiple-engine loss regardless of it being piston, turpoprop or a turbine. 9. In the worst aviation accident in South Australia for 28 years, a Navajo had multiple-engine failure crashing into the Spencer Gulf.Although the loss of both engines in this accident seem to be related, there is a small possibility that the loss of the right engine may have been caused by other reasons.* "left engine failed first as a result of a fatigue crack in the crankshaft."* "It is likely that because of the increased power demanded of the right engine after the left engine failed, abnormal combustion (detonation) occurred and rapidly raised the temperature of the pistons and cylinder heads. As a result, a hole melted in the number 6 piston causing loss of engine power and erratic engine operation."Taken from Flight Safety Australia Magazine - January/February 2002 issue Have a great Day/Night where ever you are! :-wave http://www.3dflite.com/dac/img/BANNER-soccer.gif Student Pilot - YSBKC152/Tomahawk/Warrior/Archer/Duchess66.3 hrs Total

  11. The Germans are not playing well. Its as if the German defence has travelled around the globe to get to the world cup, and are still suffering from Jet lag. They need to wake up! The Swedes are shockers also!! More credit to the Trinidad guys who held them off with only 10 guys on the pitch! So far the Argentina vs Cote d'Avoire, and Poland vs Ecuador have been the most entertaining. 12. Set climb power then control speed with pitch. Thats how we do it in GA and how a friend who used to fly Fokker 50s did aswell.ASI is selected on the autopilot rather than the VSI as a safety precaution. Can you imagine once you pass 10,000 feet, you set your climb power and your VSI for 2,000 fpm. By the time you reach FL180 your speed (depending on aircraft type, weight and several other things) will be very close to a stall!! And this can happen. It's not difficult to get distracted in the cockpit. The ASI climb is a lot safer. The aircraft will simply hold the speed you tell it to hold with the power you have selected. It might not even get you to the altitude you've selected, but atleast it won't stall on you!!One more thing...The autopilot is very stupid at times.... It won't recognise a problem until the trim is all trimmed out. It's only then, that it will disconnect and leave you in a really bad situation! Example of this was given in an incident report of a Metro III that departed YSBK to somewhere out bush. Something happened with the cross-feed, making the aircraft 300kg heavier on the right. The Autopilot simply trimmed itself to adjust for the unbalanced weight on the wings. The pilot was unaware of any issues until the autopilot reached its maximum aileron trim setting, disconnected itself, and lead the Metro into a 7,000 feet spiral dive!!!Nasty!! 13. To be fair though, the World Cup only lasts a few weeks every four years. It truly is one of the world's great sporting spectacles - seeing an unkown African player run rings around the European megastars, or seeing how many dives the Latin American teams can take in 90 minutes It's also great fun to get together with your mates and support your country, having a few beers and maybe a BBQ in the summer sunshine (as we did yesterday) Couldn't agree more. But to be fair to the South Americans (Argentina in particular) they only dived 98 times instead of the usual 100 last night :DIt was really worth the 4 years I've waited to see them play. It was well worth the wait! And for the F1 fans...Go Alonsso!!Can't wait for it to come back to Albert Park - Melbourne!! new to all this

Welcome aboard!! :DMicrosoft Flight Simulator is what I use. Started back with MS95, and now using 2004 'A Century of Flight', and will definitely be using every other version to come. There is also X-Plane, but I haven't used this so I can't really comment on it."Id like something that is like real life but something that is not overly difficult for the time being?"Flying in real life is challenging, and Fs2004 can be as well, but the realism can be toned down, and the built in Learning centre is a great place to start learning!! Honestly.I use the Sim quite a lot in my real world flying. I find it helps with Normal/Emergency procedures, and navigation training. There are also some great add-ons out there that have helped me in familiarising myself with a particular aircraft. It
  15. I'm also interested in knowing this...From what I've been told 2500 to 3000 fpm on descent is about right. On a flight back from Melbourne aboard virgin blue flight, we came down from FL380 to 10,000 in about 10 minutes!! Using speed brakes to slow us down. His descent rate didn't really shallow out until we started to turn towards the coast to land on 34L at Sydney. We were running late and from pushback, taxi and climb out I got the feeling the Captain was in a real hurry. 16. "22 overinflated egos running after an overinflated piece of leather"I don't think there are many athletes out there that don't have overinflated egos. Thats what makes them competative, and so great to watch."Or do you think that football is the only sport in the world?"Actually, living in Australia, we don't get to watch too much football, and I only really follow football when the world cup is on.So to answer your question...No. I don't think football is the only sport in the world.Being originally from Melbourne, I folllow Australian Football religiously! And no, not NRL, but AFL! Have a great Day/Night where ever you are! :-wave http://www.3dflite.com/dac/img/BANNER-soccer.gif Student Pilot - YSBKC152/Tomahawk/Warrior/Archer/Duchess66.3 hrs Total

  23. "BTW - when you say that this plane needs constant trimming adjustments, I sssume you mean the VF FS model? The real-world plane I flew in yesterday didn't need any trimming at all after take-off.."Nope, the real one. I don't mean big adjustments, but little tiny ones. I like to trim to fly hands-off, and the Tomahawk doesn't allow for much of that. It either needs a hand on the yoke making small adjustments on pitch, or a hand on the trim wheel doing the same.A few weeks ago I started flying the 152 just to get the feeling of a high wing before I jump into the Partenavia (and because its only $100 p/h :( ). This plane needs very little trim at all. Even for gliding, you just set the trim all the way down and it will hold 60 knots with no need to adjust pitch. The only way to get this in a Tomahawk is to fly in perfect conditions (i.e. Nil winds).Don't get me wrong, I really like the Tomahawk, and I think it's an excellent trainer. It has a heavier feel than most basic trainers; it has a very abrupt and nasty spin characteristic that can scare anyone silly, and it prepares you quite well for the next step into larger aeroplanes, which is why I like it so much. 24. I forgot to mention it on my other reply... Congratulatins on your first flight!! Its a great feeling isn't it?The Just Flight deactivates (if i remember correctly) by changing it's model to a crossed out red circle (much like the no somking sign, with out the cigarette). Also if you install it while running FS, it wont allow you to load the plane until you restart FS. Theres a DLL file installed into your C drive under Just Flight folder, if you remove this file (as i accidentally did once when cleaning out my drive) you will not be able to use the Tommy, and will have to re-intsall it all over again - and of course you will lose 1 of 3 allowable installations.I love flying the PA-38. I've really gotten back into doing steep turns at the moment (lots of fun!!) and the Tommy can't handle them too well so I usually take out an Archer. One other thing about this plane is that it is really hard to trim out, it required constant adjustments. It also likes to dance around its Normal axis in turbulance (Dances around like a TECHNO FREAK - all over the place! :( ) Have a great Day/Night where ever you are! :-wave http://www.3dflite.com/dac/img/BANNER1.gif Student Pilot - YSBKC152/Tomahawk/Warrior/Archer/Duchess66.3 hrs Total
  25. To fix issues with contact points, check out "Contact Points 101 for Compleat Idiots"http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?loc=articles&page=cpBut I personaly don't think it's a contact point problem you are having. I've had this problem also. I've noticed it happens mainly when changing airports, reloading/changing/repositioning aircrafts and one other factor is with weights close to or over MTOW.Only wy around this for me was like you said, to "Yaw" the aircraft down to the ground as soon as it loads to prevent it from falling to the ground. It hasn't happened to me in a while, so i'm not sure if there are any new cures for this FS illness out there.
