  1. OK, got the system prime95 stable for 6hrs 38mins before I stopped it manually. Had to use 1.36vcore, 1.40v QPI, and 1.68vDRAM. Still have to test at lower QPI settings, i. e. 1.38 etc, but if the DRAM is set anywhere below 1.68v, i get errors almost immediately in Prime. Same thing with the vcore, 1.35v just doesn't cut it. Core temps topped out at 70C running mostly about 68C. The 1.40QPI setting and a bit more on the vcore and DRAM voltages definitely make the difference for 7-7-7-24 @ 1600 and 4gHz. Mind you, this will not be a 24/7 clock, but will try for FSX usage. I can run 8-8-8-24 timings 24/7 @ 4ghz and 1600 no problem at all with lower voltages all around. Thanks again Nick, you have taught me something more about my system and system tweaking.EDIT: I bought 7-7-7 memory and that's what I wanted to get out of it. I have, so I'm happy about that. As far as FSXgoes, I do seem to see a difference at these timings over the 8-8-8 timings. How much of this is "subjective enthusiasm" I can't say. But there seems to be a noticeable difference (smoothness). I'm not smart enough to quantify the results.
  2. Nice one there Alex :) Well, I went ahead and bought an 8400gs. It works in my Vista 64 machine and I am using it right now until my GTX285 step-up arrives Tuesday. I've got it OC'd to 650core and 900 memory. Won't get many frames with it in FS9 but the graphics are better than the 9250 imho. Then it will go in my P4 XP machine for back up. Thanks for all the replies guys.
  3. Thanks for answering. It is really tough to shell out ANY money for old tech. Just thinking about it and wondered what might make it a little better.
  4. Any recommendations for a video card for an old Dell P4 2.8 PCI (not express) PC? Already have an i7 920 with a GTX285 step up on the way and just wanted to max potential with the old P4 machine. The P4 machine currently hasa Radeon 9250 in it and I just wondered if there is something faster/better that I could put in it. The Radeon 9250 will go in an even older machine I usefor playing music. Was thinking about something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130465.But I wonder if there is something faster and better. This machine will be used occasionally by the soon to be 6 year old grandson.Any thoughts appreciated.Dan
  5. Ok, will give it a try. Having trouble though verifying my DRAM voltage. I can set it in the BIOS at say 1.64, 1.66 or even 1.68 etc, butusing HWMonitor shows 1.66 almost no matter what I set the voltage in the BIOS. Is there a good way to verify the DRAM voltage?TurboV, the ASUS utility, shows whatever I have set in the BIOS for voltages. Will be probably be toward the end of this week before I start messing with it again as I will prefer to have the final hardware setup withthe new graphics card installed.Don't seem to have a problem really at 3.8 gHz and 7-7-7, though I've not run a long Prime test at this clock, maybe only 4 hours or so.Currently back on the 'ol P4 and boy, I have really missed my new system. Thanks again for your help in this matter. I feel like I'm so close to getting the thing stable at 7-7-7 timings, but there's something just not quite right.
  6. Thanks for the info Nick. I did not know that about the 920's stability issue. I have not tried as high as 1.40 on the QPI.The memory is the OCZ 1600 Platinum with 7-7-7-24 timings. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...=OCZ3P1600LV6GKI'll give it a go as soon as my GTX285 step-up arrives sometime next week. Thanks again,Dan
  7. Thanks Word Not Allowed, I'll check around. Have thought about trying 1800 or 2000 mhz memory when the prices start to come down a bit too. I realize it's not that much of a gain, but I do seem to see a difference at the faster timings at that clock. Just doesn't last too long before I get problems. It may just be the board too as you say.
  8. That's how I did it. Formatted my FSX Vrap with 64K clusters. I am 98% sure that's what Nick recommends.Edit: Ok, 100% sure now, found some posts. http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtop...hl=64K+clusters
  9. Hello All,Anybody able to get 7-7-7 timings @1600 with DDR3 @ 4gHz on a P6T deluxe with an i7920? I can't seem to get thatto be stable on my board. I can post voltages if needed. See sig for specs. Thanks,Dan
  10. "Thermalright 120 at 4Ghz on i920 gives 36C idle, roughly 62C in FSX and 78C Prime95 for a couple of hours" to quote DescendThermalright 120 at 4Ghz on i920 gives 38C idle, roughly 58C in FSX and 69C Prime95 for about 6 hours. But we keep our house cool and it is not summer yet. Temps will surely go up some.
  11. Price is really the only negative comment I can think of.
  12. You are asking about memory and overclocking, correct?
  13. Here's the OCZ Platinum 1600 7-7-7-24 at Newegg. I paid $179 back in January.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...=OCZ3P1600LV6GKOne note, can be difficult to run at 1600Mhz stable with 7-7-7-24 timings @ 4.0gzHz OC.(My experience that is, YMMV)
  14. I can vouch for the above. Got my new system up and running @ 4gHz with mostly the same hardware. FSX is very nice. Using a GTX260 at the moment. The advice given here is quite solid.
  15. Hi Nick, I am using the OCCT beta for i7 and using RealTemp 3.00, just downloaded it and it shows almost 10C difference-warmer than- from RealTemp 2.7. I set the TJMAX to 100C like you have stated. Thanks againDan
  16. I got my i7 system running and it seems to OC to 4ghz no problem at all. Used 200X20 to get there. I only did a quick OCCT test and temps never topped 65C. Idle at 35C. I need to do a good stress test for a long period of time I guess to find out how stable it is.Anyway, this i7 doesn't seem to have a problem at 4Ghz. Batch 3841A from Newegg. Thanks to all for your hardware recommendations and reports. I used this forum almost exclusively to select andbuy my products. System is still new, so we shall see how things are as time and usage passes.Just wanted to say thank you to all of you :)Dan
  17. Thank you Nick, that helps me a lot and eases my mind too. I almost did mix the two up, but scrolled further down the list to see DRAM Voltage there in the BIOS listing. The overclocks will come later to be sure, for now, just familiarizing myself with the system. Thanks again, your guides and tips have been invaluable.Dan
  18. Hi all,Just got my new i7 920 on an ASUS P6T Deluxe running with OS installed and want to know how to set and verify DRAM Bus Voltage, I believe is the setting which is not supposed to exceed 1.65v according to Intel specs.I have CPUZ and RealTemp and HWMonitor. Do any of these give accurate readings?Having all settings in BIOS on AUTO and HWMonitor says that the voltage is 1.67. I don't want to burn anything up, so how can I know the proper voltages?Using 1102 BIOS on the ASUS board. Please bear with me as I am new at this having not built a system since the 486 days in '95. I have been doing a lot of research in these and other forums and hope all this info comes together for me.Oh, using Windows 7 beta build 7000 and OCZ3P1600LV6GK memoryHope this made senseDan
  19. According to the manual, yes. The 6pin +2 form an eight pin connector for "modern graphics cards".
  20. Try here: http://www.eset.com/purchase/renewals.php $27.99 for one user renewal.
  21. Little late posting, but I bought the memory from Newegg 1/12/09 and received them the 15th or 16th.
  22. Yeah me too, Al. Got the same email and they canceled my order, boo! I did hear on some other forums that a few have actually received their cards at that deal, but they paid for next day shipping and not the free shipping.Oh, well, back to bargain shopping!Dan Brookshire
  23. Sorry Drumcode, I think I got that last 6G kit of OCZ 3P1600LV6GK 7-7-7-24 memory. But, when they get more in, you will pay $20 less than I did. FrozenCpu has a new supply of the Thermalright 120 Extreme coolers. Just ordered mine today and it got out the door too, it's on it's way already, that was fast!
  24. I got the order confirmation email and they have hit my bank account for pre-authorization in the amount of $211.If they are out of stock, I'm even willing to wait at that price. I am still buying parts for my new i7 build.Dan Brookshire
  25. I'm in the same boat as you, Al. Got my order in yesterday at $211 and hope the order gets shipped. Right now still showing "processing'. Literally stumbled on this deal. Why I went to Buy.com I don't know, don't usually, hope we get the cards.Dan Brookshire
