  1. I just discovered vatsim this weekend. It is an amazing experience. Highly recommended.Regards,George
  2. Hi all,I'm wondering, what effect if any does the course selection knob on the MCP have when in APPR mode and tracking a localizer?Regards,George
  3. Hi guys. I'm averaging about 29-30 on the ground in KMIA 26L, but I'm using the nInspector limited to 30. Resolution is 2650x1600. Weather cleared. Mods in use are GEX/REX/UTX/UT2, no add on airports in the area. I left ASE off and used "Clear Skys Theme".2500k @ 4.7Hyper 212 cooler (air)GTX 580 factory overlockIntel 510 SSD
  4. I found that going to the 580 helped very much. One thing on FPS that seems greater than everything else... don't run FSX in a window if you can help it, run full screen. That alone is worth 25% FPS for me.
  5. It is! In fact, this whole airplane feels like cheating :D
  6. I found it nice for flying manual traffic patterns also. Just select a pitch mode (atl hold) but no roll mode (no lnav, heading select etc). The press the 'CMD' autopilot button. The pitch will go into CMD and the roll into CWS. Now you can easily fly a nice pattern with the yoke and keep a perfect altitude while setting up for landing, etc. As mentioned above, if you dont roll past 5 deg. the ship will re-level itself.-G
  7. I wasn't able to get anything 'good' out of FSX before Sandybridge and 4.7ghz. It's amazing how much of a CPU hog this thing is.
  8. Yeah, the APU has its own fuel pump. SOP's say to keep a main pump running (center is best if the tank has gas) to keep wear down on the APU one if you need the APU for long periods.
  9. Ok so thanks for all the feedback. To be clear, if the FMC says "(vectors)" I had no question. I was more concerned with a discontinuity when the chart says there should be vectors to final (I'll dredge up an example in the next day or so). It's not clear to me if this is just a sim-ism due to bad nav data, or if the RW FMC would show the same issue. And based on the above, the discontinuity isn't a real problem and can be left as-is for the flight. I do wonder though... how does the FMC predict final fuel burn when there is a disco in place... just a thought.Regards,G
  10. Hey all,When flying a star to approach, I noticed a few oddities. If the end of the star coincides with the first fix in the approach, all is easy. If they differ then either:1) there will be a (vectors) entry in the legs page to indicate atc transition, or2) there will be a discontinuity in the legs pageHow should 2) be dealt with. Ive noticed this even occasionaly when the star should include vectors as per the chart. Whats the right procedure here? Fly it with the discontinuity, or somehow insert a (vectors) leg in the FMC (if so, how?)Thanks!George
  11. I'd love to simulate this procedure. Right now though, the workload is just too high. Once a certain awesome dev releases a certain required library such that a certain *other* awsome dev can release their awesome product, I'll have some help on the flight deck ;)
  12. Zach, a word of advice... You seem to mistake what people say about *themselves* as a statement about you. If you feel that your CPL is a big achievement for you, then it is (and I agree, heck my PPL was one of the highlights of my life!). Try not to take it all so personally. And I dont think anyone here would trivialize the achievement of woking an airline for a living! It may not be as financially rewarding as it deserves, but the position is hugely respected, particularly in this community.Regards,G
  13. Thanks for the good info guys. On the above... The two functions are disabled independantly, yes? I think you are saying that it is SOP to disable them in concert, but one must flip two switches, yes?Regards,George
  14. Hi all. I'm hoping for a little RW insight here. When on ILS approach...1) when/how do you chose to use autoland?2) assuming no autoland, when do you decide to disengage the autopilot, and similarly,3) when do you disengage the autothrottle? Thanks in advance!George
  15. As my CFI used to say when consoling a nervous passenger, "I'm coming back to the airport in one piece, so you are too!" :)
  16. I have both. I use rex for textures and ASE for the weather engine, which is far superior and more stable. REX Essentials might change this calculus.Regards,George
  17. In all of this, I was referring to my personal stance on flying based on somebody else's minimums, and a commercial pilot's need to adhere to the standards put to them. CP's do not enjoy the freedom to simply not go that day, for any reason whatsoever. It wouldn't take much of this to get you fired in *any* job. If your personal no-go criteria is more strict than the company's/government's/etc, you are stuck, and you arent a good candidate for flying for a living. Nobody should take this as criticism of CP's in any way, quite the contrary.Having said all that, the notion that no CP ever succumb to go pressure from their company when the regs/SOP said hold is just not credible.Regards,George
  18. No one said that, or at least I certainly didn't. What I did say was that my personal minimums wouldn't be compatible with flying for pay. You guys should really to read the posts before you respond. I have all the respect in the world for professional pilots, I just don't really want to be one.
  19. With all due respect, its not garbage, its my opinion based on my appetite for risk. As a private pilot, I'm completely free to dictate my own minimums in every respect. Everyone piloting commercial has some pressure to go, above and beyond that. And while admire your infallable judgement as apparent from your post, I wonder how many of your fellow CP's have found themselves 'up there' wishing they were 'down here'.Regards,George
  20. You can setup reversers in one of two ways.First, using the 'throttle cut detent'. You do this by assigning the detent 'button press' to 'throttle down fast'. And the same assignment with 'on release' to 'throttle cut'. Youll have to choose a single throttle lever to activate all reversers.Or, you can use the 'speedbrake' control on the hog right throttle lever for reversers, it has just the right physical properties for the job.
  21. It's shameful... But unfortunately it's also supply and demand. Consider how plain *cool *it is to be a captain. Heck, how much of our free time and money to we spend pretending to be one!? I know none of you are sitting at home pretending to have my job lol. As a result, the regionals can pay sub par dollars and have a long list of folks willing to pay their dues. Youd almost need to be a trust fund baby hahah.
