  1. Well, for one, the entry level pay is abysmal. It's embarrassing really what the airlines get away with. Second, there are times when it's really nice to say, "I'm not comfortable flying today", and just leave the plane tied down. Commercial guys just can't do that.
  2. RW flying is fun. Flying for a living has a lot of issues though..
  3. Thought so. I took a flight in a Katana a number of years back while vacationing at Disney. Stumbled on th P-51, and that cool aircraft restoration company FBO there. Fun place!
  4. I have to say, the PMDG 737 is about as easy to navigate as can be. The beauty of all that automation is...well... Its automatic! Descent planning for example, is one of the harder aspects of jet flying. The NGX literally does it for you.Regards,George
  5. Go 2500k and the 560ti. Use the saved money on an ssd. You will not regret this move.
  6. One thing: did you by chance relocate any of your document /pictures/music directories etc? This is notorious for breaking installers.-George
  7. Lay your hands on one and you'll change your mind!Regards,G
  8. I use the TM Warthog, because it's exceptionally well built, and flexible for many types of aircraft and sims. It feels less 'wrong' to fly a yoke ship with a stick than the other way around.
  9. When you do get around to picking up a hog, you *will* be impressed.Regards,George
  10. I'd like to throw in a vote for the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog. No, it isnt a yoke, but it is the most precise and functional piece of kit I've ever laid hands on. Plus you can use it for other planes/sims which are more stick-like.
  11. Just a note... LNAV will activate in FD mode on the ground (5 deg restriction as mentioned above) but the autopilot will not engage automatically. The 737NG autopilot is certificated to be activated at 400 AGL or above in the climb.-G
  12. Let me try to nip this off quick ;)Both platforms are aweful out of the box. Both are capable when modded by talented developers. Overall FSX has better mod support.
  13. Thanks for all the great info!-G
  14. Interesting, because my experience is just the opposite. On my 6950 (unlocked, stock clock), the AA and AF modes I was able to get working looked "ok". On the 580, I'm running 4xMSAA/2xSSAA + transparency, and the world looks dramatically better. I wonder what else is at work to produce this difference, and of couse the FPS is better, but it is a 580 not a 570.Regards,George
  15. Hi all! I'm looking for your choice here. I need one orbix NA region and one airport pack to base my Accusim Cub out of. Something with some really fun locations to explore (nearby.... This is a Cub after all). Thanks in advance-George
  16. I just did this.6950 to 580, and running at 2560x1600.The 580 is a beast. While you will not get double the frame rates or any such nonsense, you will be able to crank up the aa and af to absurd levels. I recommend googling nivida fsx guide, and follow the setup instructions by pmdg using nvidia inspector, my lord it looks amazing.-GP.S. ever notice how sucky the 6950 is in windowed mode? The 580 takes less of an fps hit also.
  17. Everything ryan said is spot on. 560ti is the sweet spot, and it will do the shooter quite nicely also.If you can swing it, get an ssd for fsx.... Just do it.
  18. Im using FS Kneeboard, works goods so far!
  19. Im usually on the side of the small dev, but not this time. I strongly disagree with this sentiment. FSX was a deeply flawed product when released in 2006. It took until 2011 (5 *years*, people) and sandy bridge hardware to get anything acceptable performance wise. In any other consumer category, this kind of lack of quality would be laughable. In software, it is too frequently common. Yes, maturity suffers on the internet, we get that, but nobody makes business decisions based on forum talk.Poor quality all those years ago is the fundamental reason for the death of MSFS today, and I can only assume that the dev team is the 'owner' of this failure (or it could be MS management, or both). I'm sure they are nice fine people, but they dropped that ball.Blaming the customer is myopic, and I might add, a poor business strategy.Regards,George
  20. DCS is amazing. Totally different experience though, but very well executed. I've been wondering what would happen if Eagle Dynamics decided to do a civ sim.
  21. Let's hope!! Definitley no need to panic, but looking to the future is a good thing. Particularly if you are a software developer, as these apps take a long time to create.Regards,George
  22. Hi Ray,1. MS has already dropped suppot for FSX. On my Win 7 pc for example, I had to copy in a DLL from Vista to make the UI stable. In addition, the FSUIPC guys fixed another instability problem via some ingenious external hack. If it were not for these two community solutions, I'd be dead in the water (or air, as it were :) ). At some point a show stopper will crop up that can't be worked around in this fashion (i.e . without source code modifications and a rebuild).2. Backwards compatibility from os to os version is a feature of windows, but it is not a manditory thing in any way. It is MS's discretion which apps they test against, and which ones they ignore. A dead end product like FSX will certainly be ignored, as it already has. Even ATI has stated that the graphics engine in FSX is no longer supported by them.I love FSX right now, but its biological clock is ticking loudly ;)Regards,George
