  1. Purdue University (my alma mater) is now charging roughly $10,000  for their 50hr. pp course (I think is still 50hrs). This is just the "flying" part as one would concurrently take a 4 credit ground school. Granted one only needs 40hrs (35hrs at a 141 school) but this is not typical in my experience. I did mine over summer semester... nothing but studying aviation and flying for 2 months. Wasn't until my next flight course... about 30 hrs into it that I actually "felt" like a private pilot. Here's a good link to check for a rough idea at a club. https://engineering....u/PPI/learn.php
  2. Hi Mike (M) (hi to you too HighMike btw) Has the Race Committee made a decision re: OpusFSX (http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi.htm)? I mean... you guys all over this, right? tia, -Rob p.s. btw... any yous guys using yet?
  3. You guys were all aware of this (Jeffe [a.k.a. Jefe] surely is )? I just stumbled across it. http://www.virtavia.com/ Under "News" for May 31st Sim Outhouse link discussing it. http://www.sim-outho...it-now-freeware! fwiw. -Rob
  4. Wheelpants :Phbbbt: Bah! Can't check the virtual brakes... blocks more of the virtual downward view... collects virtual mud and weeds... virtual mounting holes round out (requiring virtual repair)... adds virtual weight... harder to check virtual tire pressure... how to mount virtual bush wheels? need I continue with more virtual reasons?
  5. I reckon it will depend on how much the discount is... year and a half ago I bought FTX Australia from them for $50... shipping was $11 (U.S. Midwest). yeah updates are a non-issue...
  6. Anti-Ice. Also to (help) prevent frost / fogging. -Rob O.
  7. Big thing here are your temps. I can't specifically address the LMP application (I've only used Ultra). Did you try searching Youtube for any related vids? You are monitoring with something like RealTemp? If it is like LMU (which seems similar) I would expect to see the H100 "stained" from where the LP made contact. As TechMax said... a very thin coat on the underneath side of the IHS should suffice. For lapping... I had a local glass shop cut me a 4"x8" piece of 1/4" thick glass (beveled the edges). That was about the right size for paks of sandpaper like this : http://www.amazon.com/3M-03006-Wetordry-Automotive-Sandpaper/dp/B005JPGTNI/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_text_y Two excellent threads on this subject: http://forum.avsim.n...eds-de-lidding/ http://forum.avsim.n...-ultra-results/ Note particularly what the BimmerCop has to say. One thing he mentioned was the grit(s) he used in this order: 180 - 220 - 320 - 400 - 600 - 800 - 1000 - 2000 - 3000 Only thing I might add would be to use 1500 & 2500 (since it came in the above pak... why not?). You finish with 3000 and it will be mirror-like (as he said). I spent a good number of hours too (like the Techmax)... this isn't an afternoon project... I sand all in one direction, change grit, then rotate 90° and sand again until all the scratches from the previous sanding are removed (easy to tell as they are 90° from my current direction). Keep the sanding area wet (you are using Wetordry?) but not soaked. Sand a short bit, wipe off the surface of removed material, a couple drops of water on the metal, resume sanding. Firm but not too hard pressing... let the grit do the work. One thing (as per manual) it's not a prerequisite to lap the cpu / cooler for LP - but the coating is a smidge thick more it says (we're talking thousandths of an inch)... hence why one laps - so there is less TIM. @TechMax... very nice de-lid pictorial btw. :good:
  8. yes you do need to be careful... and a few "caveats" (like keeping room RH at a certain %) but under "normal" operating conditions this works great... that pic was when I first start using it... summer of 2008. opened the case once after months of use (maybe close to a year?) and was nearly dust free... looked like new.
  9. A possible (or alleged) example: http://www.techspot.com/news/50251-swiss-railway-operator-says-apple-stole-their-clock-design.html
  10. Certainly could use a car radiator... Typically I have seen modders using heater cores... cheap but very effective apparently.
  11. CG Chris... :yahoo: & :drinks: hoping you get that Lear add-on.
  12. I don't think it will ever stop as long as there are "men" and EULAs to violate.
  13. :Big Grin: haha ok... yeah this place disney land compared to some of the stuff that goes on in some of the chess forums. Talkchess can be a nutty place (some of the subforums) so I don't participate much there. "Officer needs assistance" :Big Grin: "BimmerCop disregard... The State of Texas to the rescue..."
  14. Bimmer... Wims... I appreciate the responses y'all made (quite honestly I thought I would be hammered for that position). The other thing I'd like to add... I wonder how many of the M$ users purchase Microsoft products. If someone broadcasts or flaunts their EULA violation... there isn't much to be done except take a (vocal) stance against it (I do believe we should care about it)... and e.g. in the case where I admin for a chess engine forum... delete the user account (probably done here i'd imagine). What keeps a commercial outfit from doing "it" would be potential litigation / loss of rights. And when I say commercial I mean like a flight school or university. Totally up to LM in this case. Individuals really have nothing to worry about. This isn't much different when you compare to the individual who copies a video / dvd or music and distributes in a very limited circle. Or the person who "speeds" but not so much as to get noticed or make it worthwhile to pursue. Enforcement cost is not worth the time / effort. So we who have a moral compass and know EULA violations can impact us all (in this case the potential for higher fees / end of further development / loss of use etc.) sure we can say something. Other than that... :unknw: Btw when I say "have no interest in what others are doing" I mean in the sense of minding my own business. "They" start to advertise their indiscretion on a forum... well then sure... they are making it our business (maybe I was not clear on that point).
  15. This is what sucks all the joy out of a debate... let people's post stand for what they are... someone acts like a child, it's easy enough for all to see. And a mod can always step in an reign in someone acting nutty. I don't understand why "everyone" who is / are discussing in a reasonable tone need to be "punished".
  16. Oh that's rich... nice comeback. You can always tell someone in the death throes of their argument when the insults / weird accusations start flying... And so is the the type student / user you are - to be in compliance with their EULA. So to say "I'm using it in home" as some sort of justification you're complying with the EULA is dancing around the license... The only person you are fooling is yourself... no need to broadcast that here as who cares what you do. I think that a bit of a leap Alain... I personally (and certainly so many here) have no interest in what other people do with this or that. Yet we still abide by the retailer's restrictions (as much as we might disagree with "it"). It's really none of my business what others are doing (until maybe they start flaunting it on a public forum). -Rob
  17. Sorry to go OT here... well... not so much... I thought we're done with that Microsoft insult here? I'll tell you... every time I see that stupid M$ and think about the billions Bill & Melinda Gates have given to their foundation... or the number of people he (Bill) and Buffet have encouraged to sign "The Giving Pledge" (http://givingpledge.org/)... or e.g. Paul Allen and his charitable giving... I get so :t0105: So Walley (or anyone else who likes use that juvenile slam)... when you get to point where you have given more than $30 billion of you wealth to philanthropic causes... sure... feel free then to use the M$ insult.
  18. Wow there's hyperbole if I've ever seen it... way, way over the top. With a post like that... yes I understand. Who doesn't have Windows? Ok some student at college or software developer (used to be the photography folks)... someone that put the OS above game compatibility and preferred Mac or Linux etc. Family gave me the Standard Edition for Christmas 2006... what less than 50 bucks (35?) ? And I was very happy with that (missing Maule gauges and I would have hoped for better performance but :nea:). Acceleration the next October? For what like $35? And now together "Gold Edition" can be found for less than $30. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16832116553 I didn't buy my first add-on until 2008, and then only due to the MS Round-the-World-Race - to have a few mo' bettah race aircraft. Add-ons by no means necessary to enjoy FSX. So Miguel... help me here: I don't understand your post. :-( -Rob Yes... anyone around back then... when Phil Taylor was here (what a great guy he was)... Phil made that perfectly clear. That is why I find the Microsoft statement about "ending support" very amusing.
  19. I think he would prefer the term APB (all points bulletin). :shok: 10-code Regards,
  20. Dang! Due to my inattention and dereliction of duty (goofing off in another post) I have missed another opportunity to help the Ró! Losing Brown Points Regards, -Rob Edit: oh btw... Tom... :air_kiss: :Big Grin:
  21. Bimmer I have to know man... did you sleep last night? You look pretty stressed in your pic. Nytol regards btw, Yeah... that and take your... ehem... time doing some "relaxation techniques". Because I am sure your state AG will stick this right up there with the fan that (allegedly) burned her legs on a stadium seat. Exactly Fr. Bill... In fact I read that CS statement and was :LMAO: ... just read again and here I am :LMAO: You know... I think MS smarter than we give them credit. I think they knew by putting out that statement, there would be many, "the sky is falling" posts and being very bored atm, they would have time for read and a chuckle or two. Just Look! 100 posts in this thread alone! Puccini's smiling teeth regards, -Rob :Big Grin:
  22. Wait... let me see if I understand this correctly... your motherboard actually catches fire from a failed component, and you are not sure what the boot problem is related to? Or are you trying to say you are not sure what caused the component failure in the first place? I had a Tyan S2895 motherboard recently fail. Got the "acrid" smell of some component failing (faint whiff anyway). Found one of the small capacitors had ruptured. That's all it takes for a comp not to boot (could have had more components that failed but I have no way of testing that). A loose wire is certainly possible. I had a psu once returned to me where one of the pins on the 24 pin connector did not "clip in" in the connector (the "ears" had been broken off so the lead could not clip in). So you can certainly try looking at all the connectors. (pic below displays what I mean... I would think this a very unusual problem tho). You could also get a psu tester... something like this: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16899705003 Had a neat experience once checking a psu... while testing heard a low pop and a huge cloud of white smoke came out the back (better than a 4th of July smoke bomb). Took 2 or 3 secs before I realized "yes I am alive and not being electrocuted". bizzzzt Your failure sounds more like power connected to a ground... dunno how tho. Those connectors are supposed to be the so called "idiot proof".. they only go in easily (key word there) one way. Some years ago people were confusing the 8-pin power connector with the 8-pin PCI-e connector (but some changes made to prevent that now). Could be as simple as a failure of the component on startup... how to know? I know the RMA stuff is a bit of a hassle and who doesn't want their comp to fire up the first time (not like the one you describe). I have a board now in the process of returning / replacing. QC is good (quality control) but by no means perfect and we occasionally get "the luck of the draw". I know this feeling quite well. Regroup... think it thru... take your time... be sure of what you are doing (if not - you know plenty of help here or many other places on the net). Commit to getting it "right". May take you longer than expected and more aggravation than you imagined... in time you can get it sorted (I have to tell myself these things btw). -Rob Loose pin on 24-pin connector
