  1. I've toured around the islands looking for large flat fields that can support a group flight. I found a nice big field at the eastern end of the big island, and another on the southeast coast. To help with situational awareness, I print-screened the top-down views and pasted them into a graphics program. Funny... these look familiar... very familiar... extremely familiar. Looks like MS is re-using some fairly big chunks of terrain to save on development time!
  2. I have a "less than top end" machine too, and I'm glad we can adjust the graphics options to our tastes and priorities (better scenery vs better performance). I have Sharpness and Texture Quality set to high, the rest set to low, and I'm very pleased with the setup.
  3. The other night on a group flight, we had less of a "wow" moment and more of a "LOL" moment. One of the guys encountered a wind glitch where only he was experiencing a 96 knot wind at the airfield. We were sitting on the ground looking up at this Maule hovering just above us as he did the world's slowest flyby.
  4. With all those difficult-to-reach aerocaches on Kauai, I refused to go Kamikaze mode to get them. I parked the Icon on the beach, and hiked inland. Climbing over the mountains and through the gorges, I was astonished at the level of detail, and at just how amazing the scenery is there. I'm glad I did it on foot, taking the time to take in the scenery.
  5. True -- but I've driven a Mazda RX-8 around race courses. And buses typically understeer like a b*stard. I think that's going to be a big driver for future changes -- every change they make has to take into account the impact on multiplayer sessions.
  6. Agreed. Personally, it interests me no more than driving a bus around a race course.
  7. No BSODs yet, but I do get the occasional CTD. In fact, my CTDs are more frequent when flying the Corsair in flyby view.
  8. And actually even more than that, given that day and night times are different textures.
  9. I would assume that MS will merely paint the snow onto the scenery similarly to Hawaii's green vistas. But yeah, I could see the merge as being an important factor.
  10. Watching a science-related TV show today, one of the scenes was at the observatory at Mauna Kea... surrounded by snow. Hey Microsoft, WHERE'S OUR SNOW? :LMAO:
  11. I see a similar dynamic in a racing sim forum every time the topic of Formula 1 comes up. Most posters like F1 and discussing the races, but there are always some who whinge and moan about "boring races" or "it was so much better in the old days" rather than just accepting it for what it is or just walking away. It's weird that some people get irate when others don't see things the way they themselves do.
  12. I sometimes fly ILS approaches at night in the fog. I sometimes fly VOR between islands "just because." I sometimes fly under bridges, awnings, through hangars, etc., because they're there. I sometimes get down on the deck and go zooming between the trees because I like to scare the bejeeezus out of the squirrels. The only difference between a game and a sim is how you use it. I use it however I damned well please. Pbthh! :P
  13. I assume they also have snow-free terrain for summertime? That'll be interesting -- a totally different look for summer/winter. I wonder if the winter runways (or roads for that matter) are slippery?
  14. I flip flop between having the stability assistance on & off -- though I'm usually lazy and have it on. I notice with the stability assistance off, it's easy to pull up too hard on the elevator, go into a high-speed stall and snap roll right into an inverted spin.
  15. I don't think anybody in Hollywood studied physics. Like the guy who shoots somebody with a shotgun -- the guy he shot flies 10 feet backwards, while the shooter barely flinches. C'mon guys... :LMAO:
  16. The newest screens are nice (as were all the screens of Hawaii) but the real proof is in the playing, and in new aircraft.
  17. No stick yet, so when I want to get aggressive with the Corsair I use the keyboard. I assume it's the gamepad that's giving you grief, 'cause the Corsair will loop fine with the keyboard, though a little sloppy. I don't have any of the other warbirds, but from friends' feedback it seems it's sluggish compared to the Mustang, but it rolls much faster than the Zero.
  18. Agreed. A little patience goes a long way. Imagine somebody coming upon Flight for the first time a few months from now. They'll have a lot more choices than we've had available in such a short time frame. My chief complaint about Flight is the cockpit-less warbirds. I think if they'd had VC's, it would have forestalled the vast majority of complaints (my own included). But Alaska shows promise, and I'm still cautiously optimistic about it.
  19. Plausible. I'd get a kick out of missions where you need to use the helicopter to deliver extreme skiers to the top of Mount Fillintheblank.
  20. I agree -- Flying under stuff is one of the greatest parts of MS Flight! Bridges & awnings at Hilo, hangar at Wheeler, hangars at Honolulu... endless fun.
  21. Tell me if this sounds familiar: Alaska preview pack will be free. It'll include 10% of the state and a dozen airports, a few new aerocaches and missions. No planes. Alaska expansion pack will be $30. It'll include the rest of the state, one new VC aircraft, and a bunch more aerocaches and missions. One or two more VC aircraft (the good ones) will be available at an additional fee of $15 each. How's that for a wild-assed guess?
  22. I tried belly-landing the F4U -- mixture -0-, flaps full, came down gingerly over the runway and set it down at just above stall speed. Results were ... less than satisfactory. :vava:
