Well, to be honest, staring at a computer monitor is the ultimate immersion killer. But what are you gonna do?
  2. Yet who knew that you would've been able to get a refund had you purchased?!
  3. I still don't think it can get worse than ICE671.
  4. What are the controls for shoot, punch and kick?
  5. Better yet, how about people actually try it first. Oh, and get this: if you don't like it, get your money back. Try that with a lot of software...
  6. There sure is but I think that there's little appetite--and rightfully so--of people clowning around over something they don't even have yet. p.s. Can't believe I just fed the troll.
  7. Fixed your post for you.
  8. I was messing around with the X-Plane trial this past weekend (not sure why, exactly) with a keen eye on VAS. Sure enough, I rarely saw it move above 4gb. A few times, sure, but not often. So, by using one other example, I think it's a great stride to make sure that P3D is tip-top in terms of VAS management before just plowing into the 64-bit realm. All of that to say that I agree with you.

I noticed at least one line item in the change log that mentioned something being off-loaded from the CPU to the GPU so every little bit helps. I seem to gather that any stuttering is from core 0 trying to synchronize everything.
  10. You can also find plenty of youtube videos of his music performances. Very interesting guy indeed.

How is your ultra-cheap, ultra-efficient, awesome flightsim platform coming along?
  12. I was pretty OCD about my testing methodolgy. I ran an Intel Extreme Tuning Utility stress test before and after the delid process. The ambient temperature was the same and both runs were preempted by a 5 minute "warm up." At 4.8Ghz, my 3770k cooled off 9.5*C on average across all cores. The average maximums decrease was 10.75*C. Full data here: Before Delid (4.8Ghz HyperThreading On / 25*C Ambient / 5 minute warm up) Core 0 Core 1 Core 2 Core 3 Average: Average 79.80 83.46 82.77 78.76 81.20 Max 85 92 90 86 88.25 After Delid (4.8Ghz HyperThreading On / 25*C Ambient / 5 minute warm up) Core 0 Core 1 Core 2 Core 3 Average: Average 74.54 69.75 74.61 67.85 71.69 Max 79 76 81 74 77.5 I too have read about CLU drying but it seems like that happens over the course of years, not weeks. I really don't think that's what happened. To be honest, I have no idea what happened but, as the common definition of "insanity" goes, I just reapplied the CLU and am hoping for the same thing not to happen again. Just to reiterate, I applied it on the die--again--but also on the inside of the IHS in case the CLU decides to shift or move around (it really seems to resemble solder and with a melting point of 8*C (found in the MSDS), it is a little viscous at room temperature), there should be more coverage. It's also worthy to note that when you start to clamp the socket brace over the IHS, the IHS will get shoved downward a tad. I wonder if that had anything to do with anything...

I may be wrong but I don't think SLI allows you to multiply the available VRAM of one card by however many video cards you have.

How will the LM execs be able to sleep at night?? Oh, the humanity!
  15. I was. I refiled while stuck on a taxiway and the used the ATC menu option to request a different runway (that option disappears once you accept a runway hence why I refiled).
  16. That's still available from ATIS. In fact, I did a flight recently from KIAH to KEGE where the departure involved an egregiously long wait for a departure runway when ATIS claimed a parallel runway was also available (but to which ATC was not assigning departures). I refiled my IFR plan (in order to get a new clearance from ATC) and requested the parallel runway. The second traffic moved up enough to allow me a useful taxiway, you better believe I was off and running. Let's just call it a fault in default ATC. I think we can all agree that LM doesn't have much incentive to fix the ATC logic. I know there are some 3rd party efforts but those seem slow-going and facing uphill battles. I wish them the best but damn if it'd be nice to have some quality, accurate offline ATC. And it's a shame because I work with and know plenty of folks that could help (with U.S. procedures at least). Not a beta tester but I can't imagine that'd be the case. Surely the install path and .exe data has changed...
  17. Sir - thank you. While not a commercial client (but one that has spent over $200 on your products), I appreciate the level of communication and professionalism (but perhaps not the sardonic forum moderator) that PMDG provides its customers.
  18. I was thinking the same thing but that does technically fall within the process of calling up the ATC window. Look: there is a cult out there that just has to have a transparent ATC window. I'm glad they have it now... mostly so I don't ever have to hear them gripe about it. Now, who knows, maybe the level of transparency (or ability to adjust) isn't to their liking. May I refer them to the [default] key of the "tilde" sign. It's that one next to the "1" key (they'll have to figure out whether to the left or right). Enjoy!
  19. Life is merely what happens in between GoT seasons.
  20. There are some salient points being made. 1) Perhaps biased as an English major (but with a technical graduate degree whose contents isn't really applicable here), writing is important. Many technical jobs (e.g. STEM) can get away with shoddy grammar and writing since the content is pretty important. But delivery is key and I strongly emphasize that care be put into the message. Believe me, it goes a long way, no matter what profession. If English is your first langauge, please take advantage of that as much as possible. If it is not, brush up as much as you can and you will see a benefit. 2) Reik makes a great point: all services have piloting needs, even the Coast Guard. As do the reserve branches and national guards. All that being said, you have over a dozen avenues to pursue if you want to serve. 3) I'll just make this an exploratory question but does something like ATC, aircraft maintence, etc. interest you? Often, these are high-paying and stimulating jobs. Also, you may consider airline techops or dispatching. 4) I strongly invite you to read Cockpit Confidential by Patrick Smith, a commercial pilot and notable airline columnist. Among many topics he covers in his [oddly configured] book is the process of becoming a pilot. It is costly, time-consuming, all completely centered on the idea of "seniority." It is quite simply not the same career as it was 15 years ago, let alone 30 or 50. You may also get some fairly valuable insight into the career in a practical sense (as opposed to a technical one). Hope this helps.
  21. Did it ever occur to anyone that the "we'll call it 3.0 for a bunch of bug fixes which = new license purchase" is simply a squeeze play that many in-house marketers enact when they start getting a better handle on who their market segments are? Let's break it down: If we assume that more revenue dollars come from commercial/military clients, $2300 is nothing. We take that in parallel with the semi-transparant fact that 3.0 is a lot of SimDirector fixes. Said market segment likely cares a lot about SimDirector since this platform is, as stated plainly in LM's marketing materials, a training platform. If anyone here has actually used SimDirector, no one will ask much more of this point. Now skip to the AVSIM crowd. Likely an unintended revenue source (although they should've seen this coming; c'mon... enhance and update FSX and you'll have a line around the corner), they know that all of us will pay again--and yes, even you guys/gals that are complaining right now--so, in which case, there is no downside to calling this a new version. As I have argued in the past: while the P3D unit belongs to a bohemeth of a U.S. defense contractor whose bottom line is in multiple billions, P3D is likely an intended profit-center business unit. They need to show some profit lest they be cut... And they can get it right here.
  22. In all fairness, it looks like far more than avatar mode. I also like how I was lampooned for admitting the likelihood that JV was right. "Ah, he's just bitter about having to update all of his installers." Right. Or he's a top developer in the industry, has/had a beta, and knows what he's talking about...
