strange-video card performance answer?

Change only your fs9.cfg file.Find the line that states (in brackets removed to post here):DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200.0Replace that line (also add brackets)to:DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA Drivers on Win2K/XPIf you have a system other than win xp/2k-nose around the display.cfg file and find a card that most nearly matches yours. Use that as your entry and see how it works. When you reset the sim-you will have to reset some of your sliders-resolution and bilinear to tri.Good luck!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/Geofdog2.jpg

holy-moly!!!! I did it and went to klax to test in the bell206b . autogen at very dense. two stutters thats it(gmax has always loaded slowly, even in fs8 for me) but wow! atc and everthing. fps went down here and there but smoooth.

Hi Geof,Well....well....well!! I tried your little trick and I'm happy to report that my FSP in heavy clouds, thunderstorms, KLAX, KSEA, KDCA, KLGA and 100% AI traffic fell by only 2 fps! Yes that's right 2 FPS and that was for only a brief second or two!!! Smoothness overall is great but, I was getting good performance texture wise before applying this trick. The overall stability and smoothness is night and day compared to before I made the changes you suggested.I used to get an occasional pause as I approached large cities or when switching to spot view but now, it's barely noticable.Thank you for this gem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Mikehttp://www.members.shaw.ca/madamo/boeingsig.jpg

OK, I think I solved my question up above.I applied this "patch" and I flew over the Himalayas at all times of the day, all weather themes, and a lot a diffrent aircraft inlcuding add ons. My frames were at 18-20 (locked@20). My sliders were pretty high. Mesh was 80-100%, textures massive, sight maxed, clouds up to 60 miles, 3D percentage at 100%, medium resolution, 4X AA, overall the sliders were pretty much at the top. And flying over the Himalayas at dusk with a few clouds layers, both high above them and between the valleys, and still getting 17-20FPS... THANK YOU Geof!My system:AMD Athlon XP 1500+ (1.33GHz)512MB DDRGF4 4200 64 MB <----Yes, my card is a 64 MB card and I get the above results.BTW, when I opened FS9.cfg and searched for:"DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200.0"I got the line as well as this one:"DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 (Microsoft Corporation).0"located at two different places, I changed first the upper one, then the lower one. The lower one seemed to do the trick for me.And lastly, a new question:Below both of the lines I just talked about, there is a screen resolution. Mine did not match. See if you have the same 2 lines and 2 different resolutions below them. Why are they there?

I must say I got a little excited by Geofa's little trick.Alas, it does not seem to do much for mine unfortunately.Or maybe it does but I find 800x600 16bit a bit too dull for me.The GeForceFX5900 is not in the display.cfg either and as JohnCi mentioned it just created another entry when I switched to 32bit.Am I right in assuming that you may only benefit from this trick is if you fly in 16 bit mode only. ?I noticed a change straight away when the sim loaded up, went to bilinear and defaulted at 800x600 16 bit.I like to see where I am going so 1280x1024 32 is the only resolution I can put up with.

any word on this for ati users? i think the terrain looks more fs2002-like(better than 2004 in my opinion) but thats about it, other than smoother mesh(maybe because of ATi's truform?) theres not much of an improv for ati people.

"any word on this for ati users? i think the terrain looks more fs2002-like(better than 2004 in my opinion) but thats about it, other than smoother mesh(maybe because of ATi's truform?) theres not much of an improv for ati people."Nothing here on my 9700 Pro based system. Tried a few different variations in "Didplay" line of the FS9.cfg. Still looks and flys as well as it did. Pretty cool trick for the Nvidia folks, though.

Stephen,I also got the same resolution on start up. Does changing it help? Does it stay the same when you restart FS? If not, then look at my second reply to this topic. Search for the second line that I found with a similar name in the fs9.cfgLet us know how it works for ya.

After you add the lines, FS will start up in 800x600 16 bit. At that point just change it back to the resolution you were using before and Fly baby fly. I think simmers with mid range to low end systems will benefit the most.Tim

Great find!!!! I have Windows ME, so what do i replace this line with??>>DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA Drivers on Win2K/XPdo i leave it like this in the FS9 CFG, or do i put in "Win98/ME instead?? Please tell me i want to really try this mod out!! MIKE-:) -:)

Damn, I got another 9fps. Good work!NVidia 4200 with AMD 2.6ghz

Take a look at the display.cfg in your fs2004 directory. Find the card that most closely matches yours e.g. has win98/me after it-and hopefully your type.Change the entry in your fs9.cfg.Again-the process seems that fs9.cfg "calls" your card. My theory is that in some cases-the card does not exist in the display.cfg and thus something strange might being used instead. You (and ati users) might try using a different card and note the results. I tried a few last night-and the results were different (not always faster-and sometimes video quality different). In my case-my card-the geforce 4 4200ti is not on the display.cfg list. I was never able to see any effect whatsoever by moving the sliders back in forth (no improvement or deprovement). I am postulating that when fs started-when it didn't see my card on the list-that it was loading some default or wierd card that caused this.By changing to the nvidia generic I am thinking that now although not specific to my card-it is at least using nvidia properties. All I know is that now my sliders do change performance-dramatically-and the sim runs much smoother.Unless faced with my situation it probably won't do much-but then again it shows that it might be worth experimenting with the settings or card that is being called in the display.cfg.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/Geofdog2.jpg

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Well, I nominate this as the tip of the sim for FS2K4! I tried it and stutters gone, blurries greatly reduced, FSGenesis' 38m mesh finally showing up, even the water looks better! Thanks, Geofa, for giving us some light at the end of the tunnel. My system:P IV 2.6 HT512 PC2700 RamXP SP180g 7200 HDGF4 MX440 8x AGP
