January 31, 200521 yr hi allafter i did my mini upgrade a week or so ago and placed the GForce FX6600GT in my Asus A7V7X mobo, my computer runs very hot after an hr or so playing flight simulator, i only have a 300W power supply and i believe that to these new tech Video Cards need alot of electricity to run, ive also notice that i take off nice n smooothly only to find that when i am approaching my destination, the game is down to its knees with fps at around 5 and very noticable stutters,so i'm wondering is this bc the computer is running hot that im losing performance ? January 31, 200521 yr What kind of cooling systems do you have? One onboard card fan isn't going to do much. I can't explain why you're overheating, but I can tell you that you should get a better power supply and mount a couple of more fans.Jeff USAF Jeff Commercial | Instrument | Multi-Engine Land AMD 5600X, RTX3070, 32MB RAM, 2TB SSD
January 31, 200521 yr Author Well Jeffi'm not running any cooling systems at present, just the standard fan which comes with the tower case and the default fan which comes with the AMD cpu which i bought 2 yrs ago. I7-10700F RTX 3070 32 Gig Ram
January 31, 200521 yr Clayton,The temperature of your system will not affect performance, per se. It can of course affect stability - if the system is too hot for any particular component, you risk having that component shut down or fail.Sounds like you might want to invest in a couple of extra case fans. They are a lot cheaper than a new cpu, hard drive, graphics card, etc.Doug
January 31, 200521 yr My 2.4 ghz ran OK and didn't over heat but when I went to 3.2 it did until I had a total of 7 fans runnning marginally. I then went out and bought an Antex case (bigger) and again run seven fans but the temperature remains just fine. Just wanted to pass on my experience. Hope it helps.russ
January 31, 200521 yr Author Thx for your replies, but i have a sneaking supiscion that something is a bottleneck in my system, i know for a fact that my Video Card is not running at its maximum due to the low power supply, inface when i booted it up the first time with the new card it was informing me that my powersupply is low. Then after running FS2004 for say 3hrs continous my computer heats up, it didnt do this when i had the Ti4200 card in there. I7-10700F RTX 3070 32 Gig Ram
January 31, 200521 yr While it may not be the industry standard, the 6600GT that I purchased had a manufacturer's recommendation of at least a 350 watt PS. Had a 300 at the time and went to a 450... Rick
January 31, 200521 yr Clayton, how are you measuring the temps? Most monitoring software that comes bundled with motherboards is not very accurate. Motherboard Monitor and EVEREST Home Edition are much better choices. They are both freeware.Greg
January 31, 200521 yr Clayton, First I strongly suggest that you get a new power supply, they are fairly cheap so it will not damage your bank account. You can get power supplies that have 2 fans built in, this will help your temps by a small amount. Try to get the highest wattage power supply you can, but try to get one from a good manufacturer because cheap power supplies are just that, cheap, and could give you problems. I would also purchase a couple of case fans, actually three would be an ideal number if your case will support them. One fan blowing air into the case and two blowing out. If possible position the one blowing the air in to blow the air on to or near the CPU. If your case does not have room for more fans don't give up, replace the fan(s) that are in your case with one of higher performance and this should help a bit. The more airflow you have the better off you will be because the cooler your computer runs the longer your components will last. Temperature can cause some performance loss but not as much as many would think so even after you cool the case down you will probably have to tweak some to get the best performance. January 31, 200521 yr Author hi thx for your replies, yes a power supply is definately on the priority list i was thinking of obtaining a Powersupply Antec ATX TruePower 550W I7-10700F RTX 3070 32 Gig Ram
February 1, 200521 yr Great choice! Antec makes a great power supply and I almost put that in my previous post as a suggestion. With a 550 watt PS you should be set for quite some time. If you need any further advice about cooling, or anything else, feel free to email me, I am in the business so I can help you to get that case cooler even if your current case is not designed for more cooling. I can also point you in the right direction for the best prices on things since I am constantly buying such items.Philip OlsonI'm the luckiest man in the world, my girl friend has a yoke and rudder pedals! February 1, 200521 yr Author Yea thx Phil i will keep you in mind if i have any questions regarding upgrades, by the way what reasonable case do you suggest for this power supply? I7-10700F RTX 3070 32 Gig Ram
February 2, 200521 yr Really it depends on what you want to spend and what you like. You can not go wrong with an Antec case but I found a pretty good deal on a case without a power supply that has lots of cooling capacity. Here is a link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...40&Sku=D15-1002 It comes with three fans and has room for 2 more if you need them and is only $34.99 US dollars. Pretty much you can buy any old case unless you are seriously into over clocking, then you have to get a case that is specially designed for the best airflow. As for "standard" cases I always look for a lot of cooling capacity as well as room for the components that I have or wish to add later. Basically you can not go wrong with a case like this since there is room for more fans, if you only have one or two fan ports you either have to modify the case yourself or buy a new one. I will do a little more searching later today and see what I can find for you. Please let me know what color you would like for the case and if you have any special requirments as to components or the lay out of the case. Also what price range you would like to stay in. Since you are an Aussie I'll try to find something from someplace closer to you unless you don't mind getting it shipped from the US.Philip OlsonI'm the luckiest man in the world, my girl friend has a yoke and rudder pedals!
