How much does resolution affect fps and performence

Featured Replies

I wonder how much the selected screen resolution in FS9 affects fps and performence? For example if changing from 1024*768*32 to 1280*1024*768 how much would that affect fps and overall performence?

It depends on the videocard. With a modern card like the X800XT you'll be CPU limited even a 1600x1200 if you don't use FSAA / AF. The simple way to find out is to simply try and keep increasing the resolution until performance begins to decrease then decrease it one notch again.

I've always used 1600*1200*32 with my more than ancient Athlon 1900XP/GeforceTi500 video card. It hasn't made much difference by going to lower resolutions, performance wise. But with my previous 22" monitor, and the present 21", higher resolutions make a large difference in graphics quality. As to fps, I use settings to keep them usually in the upper 20's to 40's. With water effects off, and mountain scenery with normal auto-gen, I can usually keep fps at the above rate.L.Adamson

This article gives an example of the latest GPU's in FS2004 at various resolutions. Keep in mind, the test was done with an Athlon 64 4000+ which is certainly out of reach for most of us, but verifies what we already understand....more cpu=more fps/performance....at least on a properly configured system.http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/dis...-27gpu2_26.html

My experience is that a higher res has less impact on fps than a higher level of FSAA. So maybe you are even better of running at 1600x1200 and turn FSAA down one notch. I have a 16/10 monitor and I am running at 1920x1200 with my GeForce 6800GT. The Geforce eats it. I had a Radeon 9800 before and it took a considerable fps hit. BTW I ahve a 2nd monitor on the same card at 1024x768.

What about 1280*1024?And what is a 16/10 monitor?

I bet you a beer that you can run 1280x960 without any problem on a Radeon 9800, (or 1280x1024 if that is the native resolution of your LCD screen).FSAA aka Full Screen Anti Aliasing aka AA is the setting on your video card that super samples the picture to reduce jaggie lines and does indeed take a chunk out of your fps if you go to 4XAA and beyond.Start with 1280x960 and 2XAA and I bet you you'll be fine.

Only 1280*1024 will be possible. That is the resolution of all TFT I have seen. The reason for my question is that I wonder if there could be a problem with getting a TFT before (or without) upgrading the CPU.I will take a look at my AA settings.

> Only 1280*1024 will be possible. That is the resolution of all TFT I have seenWell you are wrong there as i am running my Dell 20" LCD at 1600x1200(native resolution) with a Radeon 9800 pro, FPS are excellent with no ghosting

Hi,Hope you are not going to tell my 18 month old Planar that runs in native 1600 X 1200 that it is not possible. I believe that you would hurt it's feelings!!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg

Why don't you tell us what kind of CPU you have... if you are running a PIII-400 that might be different than a P4-2.4 :-)Seriously, you'll love the TFT monitor, if my personal experience is a guide. Can you not test this resolution on the monitor you have today? Does it not support 1280x1024?

Do you have the PMDG B1900C or Eaglesoft Citation II?I have and at present I can't read the text at the light switcheson the B1900C. Can you on your TFT? I find it difficult to read the engine operations display on the Citation II. Are they clear and distinct on your TFT? If yes then Yes I think I would love a TFT.Another question would I love it more than a Athlon 64 system? >Can you not test this resolution on the monitor you have>today? Does it not support 1280x1024?It can but then with a refresh rate of only 60 Hz so I have never tried.

Are you running any FSAA on that setting of 1920x1200?Noel
