February 11, 200620 yr I heard there was a new NVidia Card, 7800 AGP, that is not a PCI Express version. Is that true, and what do you think would be the difference in FS9 over a 6800GT 256 card? I will buy one tomorrow if someone who's tried it tells me that there is a SIGNIFICANT difference.
February 12, 200620 yr Hi I heard that it was a GeForce 7800GS, so its likely to be slower than the GTX and probably the GT, but it should still be a great card for FS2004.RegardsPeterH
February 12, 200620 yr Well, with a tag line like "if it ain't broke, break it", just buy it anyway and let us of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" crowd know if it was worth breaking ;) Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
February 12, 200620 yr Author Oh, Trust me..........I will buy it because my philosophy REALLY is "If it ain't broke, break it"! The upcoming FSX is is good example of that...as is Vista....as is anything. I know that Steam engines still run and work, but fortunately, man's progress in this life is tied to "breaking the current product and re-inventing it". Bill Gates is a good example of someone who follows the philosophy of my tag line.Just wondering, though, if anyone has acquired it yet. I'll call Best Buy this afternoon and see if they have it. I will report back after a reliability and fluidity test.
February 12, 200620 yr Stan - Just a thought...you might want to consider that you'll probably also want a DX10-compliant card at some point for FSX (and other "stuff"). I'm not investing in a new card until the DX10 cards come out later this year. But, then again, it's only money... :-)Doug Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. February 12, 200620 yr Author Doug,I agree...however, there's probably about 8 months minimum before FSX comes out. I'll probably sell my current rig and get a new computer to handle FS for the next couple of years.I found the card....http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1130987962424Paste the above website or click on it and check it out.$350.00 for about 8 months of enjoyment. That's $43.75 a month. That's about $1.50 per day. Hmmmm.....sounds like a bargain.
February 12, 200620 yr Stan,I was just browsing through the Sunday paper and CompUSA sales circular has a PNY 7800GS AGP card on sale for $299.00 (with an instant $50 rebate). Looks like you can save yourself a few cents per diem on your enjoyment!Pete Pete S. 10th gen CPU I7-10700K, MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge MB, RAM 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB-DDR4 3600, 2X 1TB Sabrent Rocket Q M.2 Nvme SSD. Enermax RGB CPU Liquid Cooler.(Still waiting on Evga RTX 3080 Video)
February 12, 200620 yr Author Thanks for the "heads up", Pete. Now I'm down to $.69 per day. That's less than a cup of coffee where I live. WOW!
February 13, 200620 yr Since the GPU scales with the CPU plus the resolution, there might not be a difference at all despite the better card..? Just to raise the thesis... :-) Kind regards Jaap
February 14, 200620 yr Author I guess for $250 (after rebates), it might be worth trying.... PLUS I have a friend in my office who wants to buy my 6800GT card. If I sell it for $150.00, then the upgrade costs me $100.00.Since we have so long a wait for FSX, FS9 could be a more enjoyable experience. But you're right, it may not be a significant difference in performance.
February 15, 200620 yr Author Installed the 7800 AGP card last night, and expect to do a lot of flying with it (and tweaking) this week and weekend. Easy install, and I'm keeping it. Cost $299.00 at Best Buy, because they matched COMP USA's price (took $50.00 off). and it's the BFG version instead of the PNY version, not that that makes a difference.I notice already faster loading times on everything, not just FS9. The clarity of the image seems exceptional, and FS9's first couple of flights were smooth.Had to delete FS9 config because my 6800GT was still showing up. So far, so good. I'll report anything that's strikingly different from the 6800GT in other posts, but for the difference of $100 - $150 after selling my old card, I guess it's a good thing until FSX comes along.
February 15, 200620 yr I am on the edge with replacing my 6600GT with 7800GT. Please tell me more about the difference in performance you see. My problem with my computer (AMD64 3200+ 1GB 6600GT) is more with the loading time. My FPS stays above 20 even with heavy clouds in PMDG737 VC but when FS9 loads stuff like textures, cloud draw the FPS drops by at least 10. And it happens every few mins. I don't know if that's more about the Vcard memory, speed or CPU or HD...oh well. All so confusing.Thank you for your input.Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
February 15, 200620 yr Why waiting for dx 10? FSX is a dx 9 game. DX 10 is not that different at all just a tweaked version of dx 9 ;). shader model 3 aren
February 15, 200620 yr Author Don't know how this will turn out, because I've never really posted pics successfully. Using the program "Snapper", here are some pics from the new 7800 AGP Nvidia card. Pics resolution reduced per forum rules.
February 16, 200620 yr That doesn't look too right to me just at a glance. FPS, not locked, only wanders around high 20's...outside view in a remote area. I'd expect to see above 50 from a 7800.Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
