O&O Defrag - Useful if you don't have photo scenery?

Featured Replies

Hi. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I couldn't decide where to put it.I believe one of the things that causes my system to stutter it when it adds ai aircraft when I cross in to a new sector.Using Filemon, I noticed that FS is regular searching all of my aircraft cfgs - probably looking for a specific aircraft. That is when I get stutters. Could using the O&O defrag by name speed this up? If so, you do you recommend I proceed?

HelloI use O+O defrag using the name method to defrag my FS9 partitionI feel that i have less pauses due to disk access and my textures seem to load quicker and come into focus faster, it is a definate improvement with photo textures.

I have used O&O defrag and had a system boot failure with it on one occasion (system files corrupted). After a recent format I did not install it.While using it I noticed no difference at all in framerates or stutters.

What is O+O defrag please?

Good topic!O&O is great defrag tool, especialy using the name sort as FS is primarily setup that way and definatly helps access times as drive head doesn't have to travel all over the place.Been using it on all drives since XP and have never add an issue.

I guess what I am wondering is do I have to do anything special to set it up to defrag by file name? I know the recommendations by mega scenery are to rename the photo scenery files. Without photo scenery, do I need to rename anything or can I just run the complete by name option with my fs directory as-is?Thanks for the reply.

> See http://www.oo-software.com/en/products/oodefrag/pro/>.>>DougThanks but see what? I already own o&o defrag. As for the instructions, I understand that the name defrag places things in order by name and directory. The megascenery people say that you should remove megascenery from the fs directory and rename the folder with a name starting with the letter "a". Is there anything I should do to any other files/folders within fs?

I'm just responding to Tingooses' question. He wanted to know "what is a O+O defrag please". Personally, I think ordering the files by name is a waste of time. But, I must admit I feel the same way about MegaScenery.Doug

I have been doing large photo scenery projects for many years and the >right< defrag proccess is key, period.

Using this method and the O&O defrag by name, you can help cure blurry textures. As the argument states, the files will be placed closer to the beginning of the drive resulting in faster read times. Now, I have already bought O&O defrag, but I don't have any megascenery. So I am wondering, is O&O defrag "Useful if you don't have photo scenery", and if so, how do you configure FS to work the best with O&O defrag by name without photoscenery.

I think defragging is sometimes a tad overrated and labeled as the unbeatable speed monster. I have seen little improvements over the years, unless the HDD got seriously defragmented.O&O defrag is still the best defragger around and highly recommended.Pat

Oh, I can definitely tell if I defrag regularly. My rig is much faster. With the ms defrag utility, I defrag 3 times before every flight. It makes a world of difference. If you do it regulary, it only takes 5 minutes.

I've tried all these defraggers, never saw enough (or really, any measurable) difference in performance to buy after the 30 day trial. My FS9 is on a RAID 0 partition, maybe that has something to do with it.scott s..

Jeff,I don't use O&O, but I do use PerfectDisk 7.0. I doubt any defragger is much help for the FS stutters you describe; really fast disks help though ;-) However, defragging using the boot option to defrag sys files does speed boot time, using the PD SmartPlacement option speeds app startup times. As to FS, I finally put it and my add-ons on a seperate partition on a seperate disk. That *did* speed things up, less stutters, if any, and takes a h*** of alot less time to defrag. Ymmv, regardless of the defrag utility you use.jbUtility links & FS screenies: [a href=http://exmixer.com" target="_blank]exmixer.com[/a]Dell XPS 600 XPPro SP2Pentium D 955EE 3.46MHz Dual Core/HT FSB @ 1066MHz 2x2MB Cache2x1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 @ 667 MHz1xOEM SAMSUNG HD160JJ/P 160GB SATA II/NCQ2xSeagate ST3160827AS 160GB SATA I/NCQOEM TSSTcorp CD-RW TS-H292B, SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB GDDR3 PCIe x16Dell 2007FP 20"SB X-FiPlextor 716UF external Hi-Speed USB2.0/FW DVD-RW/CD-RW
