July 27, 200619 yr Question for you gurus out there. I just put another gig of RAM in my computer totaling now at 2GB's. I notice on a test flight that the paging file was still showing 990MB of useage even though I had just over 1GB or physical memory remaining?? I thought that the PF was only used when there was no more physical memory left? Should I shut off the PF or will that lead to unwanted crashes or OOM errors? Eric
July 27, 200619 yr WinXP will always use a pagefile. If you shut it off there will still be a pagefile but it will be using the physical memory, not the HDD. You'll probably be OK with no pagefile on the HDD but be prepared for an OOM error if you use many complex add-ons.Doug Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. July 28, 200619 yr Never, Never shut off your pagefile unless you have around 8GB of RAM and even then you are never guranteed to never overrun the memory!2GB is nothing now-a-days and is only considered an optimal amount to have WITH a pagefile in place. To optimize performance for a pagefile you need to place the pagefile on a SEPERATE partition or on a SEPERATE HD from your operating system. That way the OS / FS / and Pagefile don't need to share read / write time on the same HD.
July 28, 200619 yr My understanding is that for performance reasons, Win XP causes some of the OS to take page space. If the related page in RAM is not overwritten, it may not need to load the pages from disk, but I think the idea was to make the memory more available by anticipating write to the page file. Writing the page file might have some performance hit, but I think the main hit is a page read, since the process will be blocked until the page fault is resolved.scott s..
July 28, 200619 yr Author Thanks guys. One more question, XP does automatically recoginze the fact that you have a an extra gig in the computer right? Nothing you need to do to tell it? Eric
July 28, 200619 yr Lean down and whisper it to the floppy drive as the computer boots up. Either that or you can just scream at it to tell it but if your computer does not listen well you are in trouble...Just kidding, in all seriousness, the O/S should recognize the memory no problem. Right click on My Computer and go to properties and it should tell you, you just have to listen really hard...:)-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
July 28, 200619 yr Author The reason I ask actually is because of a post of yours Paul. You said that your textures load right away. Mine now do to save for the blurries on the terrain textures. They are still there and it still takes some time for them to show nice and clear. My computer does now show 2GB of RAM so that is working. I will say though that this was with the PMDG 737 VC view, AS6, UT, FSG 38m mesh and all slider to the right and thunderstorms in the area (using the 128x128 clouds). Do you still get the blurries on your terrain textures and they still take some time to clear? They do clear but I thought it would be faster. FWIW, I have a 3.2Ghz P4 chip. Eric
July 28, 200619 yr Can you post the display section of your .cfg?Do I personally have blurries, no... I have an OverClocked Fx-57 with a 7900 GTX and a 7800 GTX. I also run very fast 2T memory. What memory are you running again? What are the settings on it?-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
July 29, 200619 yr Thanks that is a great review. Since Russinovich is recently hired as MS Windows "fellow", he has to be considered the guru of windows internals.scott s..
July 29, 200619 yr As I recall, the same advice has been given here on numerous occasions, it's just that people won't listen. For most users, most of the time, let Windows handle the page file allocation. The ONLY gain, as previously noted, is to place the page file on a separate hard drive away from the OS if you have more than one physical hard drive as you may gain from the dual read/wqrite capabilities. But even this only works for simmers if the page file isn't then on the same physical drive as anything to do with FS! If it is, you might as well leave it well alone on C: and let Windows handle it. No-one has ever produced any benchmark data that all this kerfuffle benefits FS, so why bother? Better to defrag regularly, clean unwanted FS addons from the FS folders - like removing all the aircraft and scenery your not using and make sure your OS and hardware is up to snuff. You'd gain more spending three minutes cleaning your CPU fan than you do from three days tweaking the page file settings. Allcott

July 30, 200619 yr I think he's looking for the timings. If you haven't changed anything, those sticks run at 2-3-2-6-1T .Doug Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. August 1, 200619 yr WOW! What timing.I have exactly the same issue.I just got the additional gig and brought it to 2Gig RAM, Thinking my blurrlies would go away. Its almost the same.. CPU 55% and 900MB memeory usage. Still Blurries.Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
