FSX upgrade experience: less than exciting

Featured Replies

I upgraded from a AMD 3700 stock 2.2GHz to AMD X2 6000...not much of a difference????My fsx hasn't been performing well ...after about 5min of flying time around KMSP I get massive blurries....everything goes blurry, including my plane, as you can see here... I NEVER saw this with my AMD3700.... locking FPS, unlocking, doesn't matter, it just goes to crap.... am I undervolting or something? I set my RAM back to stock timings....5-5-5-18 (even though its supposed to run 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v tested) Aquamark 3D runs THE SAME as my 3700 did.....that's not right... About the only way I can tell I have a 6000 in there and not a 3700 is from SuperPi....1M digits takes 29 sec....used to take 39 with my 3700+... Man, something is not right....what am I missing????helphttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/178733.jpg

Meh, that is purely ugly! Are the MB drivers installed properly?

as far as I know hehe....yesHey, the 12v ATX is a 4 pin, like I had on Asus mobo, but on this Foxconn one, it is an 8-pin. The manual "recommends" using an 8-pin, but says the older 4 pins can be used....I put that on the correct way.One other thing, I posted over at flightsim.com's forums and I forgot to mention the fact that my 4-pin connector from my video card IS NOT plugged in to my PSU - it never has been. could there be different power supply/mobo power requirements for this exact mobo?I don't know....look at Memstatus.....the video mem maxed out, then when things started to get blurry it just dropped, and dropped.... like the texture loading just gave up....sounds like a power issue huh? Never had it happen before though...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/178734.jpg

Ok, well, I plugged it in (4pin from gpu to psu), and I'm still getting those massive blurries.Yeah, I was talking about the ATX12v, not the 4pin molex...for the moboIt's weird, once it gets blurry, the video ram just drops...it cannot recover...locking at 10, unlimited, etcThe only way the textures come back sharp is if I let FSX run, but browse the internet, something where I'm not using the 3D "power." Since writing this message, things have gotten clearer again....what the heck? Here's a pic after it came back....the blurries come usually when I switch from external view to VC mode and back..Everything look alright?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/178740.jpg

Ryan,I don't get the blurries like you are seeing but I don't think that a 256mb GPU can cut it in FSX. I am seriously thinking about a new GPU but the DX10 SP2 situation has left me in two minds. Those 8800GTS cards with 640mb of memory look great, but man, the price has hardly budged in 12 months of being on the market!I think I remember the devs stating that FSX will use as much GPU memory as you can throw at it with 512mb being preferable.Sorry I don't have any better ideas for you.Glenn

One thing you might try, is starting XP barebones style. I have tried this in the past with some success on FSX and DiRT and it has helped:Go to Start>Run> type MSconfig hit OKSelect 'Selective Startup' Uncheck the following items:1)Process system INI file2)Process Win INI file3)Load startup itemsThen go over to the 'Services' pull down tab. There is a check box at the bottom of the window that says: Hide all microsoft services, check that box. Then select the 'disable all' box and reboot. This may help it may not, but it will disable your virus protection and any other programs running in the backround so make sure you change it back before you go on the internet. It will stay in this configuration until you change it back, but that is easy enough to do. Just a thought..You may also have to start any USB joystick software manually as well.

I'd bet on the video card - 256 is NOT enough if you want any appreciable settings. I had a 8800 320M card in and would get over 320 on occasion and I'd get stutters and blurries. Switched to the 640 and haven't seen a blurry or a stutter since.VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.6Evga 680i A1 with P30 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/

Well, I switched to the latest drivers which support the 6xxx series....the 163's or something...and I haven't been able to get the blurries since....I never woulda thought that what worked well on one mobo would be different on another...Anyone know how to get the nTune gpu OC settings to take upon restart of Windows?

The only thing that "works" for me is letting FS control AA and AF.-----Now, I *really* want to know is, how much faster is the 6000+ than your 3700+ was? What's your typical frame rate at a busy airport?Since you did not change vid cards, you get to see first hand the results of a direct cpu cpu swap on fs performance.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

I've been doing a lot of testing....FSX, and other apps, and also 3D Mark 06...Although I know the AMD6000 runs hot I'm pleased to say with my Arctic Freezer 64 temps have been steady under load near 50C... my amient room temp is pretty high, (high 70's), so it's not badAs far as performance goes... With SP1, UTX, FEX, and RealAir Scout I locked at 15 and flew over the MSP airport over and over (both VC and external views)....it dips to 14 once in a while...but most of the time its steady at 15...With my old system....I couldn't even lock at 10 hehe... Here's what I've been running with (same on old system)XP Pro SP2Large detail radiusMesh 89Mesh res 38mText res 1mwater 2xlow (I think a new video card would help this to medium)scenery: very denseautogen: densespecial effects: mediumTRAFFICGA 75commercial 79apt vehicle: maximumcars: 12boats/ferries 10, 9Detailed clouds, coverage maximum, 60mi view radiusNo lens flare, no bloom, no cast shadows on itselfin-game FSAA and AF set maxedAnd if a tile gets blurry it fixes itself in about 5-10 seconds...of course I still can't fly over 200 kts without scenery losing it but it's a start heheI believe a video card with more VRAM would help.... the 6800XT 256mb is definitely my bottleneck now... hehe

Wow, that's really nice. 15 in VC over MSP with that much AI is nice. That is good that you tested with the identical settings as you ran with the 3700+. Now you know for sure that it's the cpu and not just your settings.I bet once you get that tweaked out you'll get even a little better. How long are you planning on sticking with the 6800 card? Put your GLOBAL textures to MEDIUM. You will see a world of difference and your FPS will climb into the 20's.Yep....BTW, they even look better. It is not your drivers, it is the ability of keeping up with 1024 MB ground texture refreshing.I put my buddy's GLOBAL back to MEDIUM, and now he loves the perf of FSX. You get used to the medium GLOBAL tex's really fast and they look great. Try it and get back to us,Mitch

>>How long are you planning on sticking with the 6800 card? >As short as possible haha!I guess I'm *hoping* for a price drop for the 8800GTs 640s when the G92 comes out.... If it doesn't then I'd like to find an older 7950GT 512 version...hard to find these days...medium global...yuck! might as well play FS9 again lol!

  • 1 month later...

good to see the issue got resolved. I just ordered a 6000+ to replace my 3600+ dual core. It did good for a while in fsx and then I got pmdg and activesky and they just suck the life out of the processor along with fsx.Andrew
