e8500.........running at 4.10ghz,,,,,,,,,,,exploring!

Featured Replies

Hi All:My e8500 arrived, and after the initial boot at the stock 3.16ghz, I couldn't resist.....after a bit of tweaking she is sitting very happily at 4.10ghz. I will of course run Prime 95 overnight (for now) and then tweak further tomorrow- after a little more research! In the mean time, any thoughts here? At initial glance 4.2 seems very achievable- on air. I do run a Tuniq 120, massive- but worth it IHMO. I have seen scores far higher than that- but the 45nm chips seem to tolerate higher voltages less than the 65nm- and I believe that the max for the e8500 is 1.46- and 1.36 appears to be the "happy" max.......thoughts?Well- will keep testing- so far so good- please chime in with ideas- esp Gary, Sam and the other Gurus ;). Thanks!Best-Carl F. Avari-Cooper BAW0225http://online.vatsimindicators.net/980091/523.pnghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187416.jpg

wow thats wicked!sorry cant help you i know zero about overclocking! lol

Hi Carl,What kind of perfomance (in FSX) you get with the E8500? I just upgraded my PC to E8500, Vista 32 bit, 4 GB RAM, 8800GT card and I am ...sort of disapointed. For example, running all slides at their middle position (or below) I get around 8-10 fps at Aerosoft

@ Carl: Nice OC - congrats. I too have been considering going 45 nm, to replace my ageing E6600 that I can't seem to get higher than 3.6 even with decent watercooling.@ Edmundo: perhaps your system needs a quad - but even then, it's a challenge to get decent frame rates at mega airports like EGLL especially with lots of traffic. That's for future hardware or a massively overclocked extreme quad CPU IMHO lol! Or perhaps the new skulltrail 8-core intel platform haha...I finally have a stable system now after months of tweaking. Running a Q6600 quad at 4050. I am VERY happy with the performance this brings as FSX is extremely CPU dependant. Think fast CPU, multiple cores (I see nice scaling on a quad, all 4 cores utilized), fast memory (consider getting the fastest DDR2 you can afford)...Well yesterday I took my lds767 to KLAX and I got perhaps 10-15 fps on final approach, 15-20 sitting at the tarmac, observing the traffic (running Ultimate Traffic X at 100%). I have most scenery options towards the right, getting 25 fps in the air.

Well guys- after 9+ hours- Prime95 error at 4.0 :(Please advise what you would do at this point....thanks! My CPU voltage is at 1.425.....I'm thinking of bumping it up a BIT- is there anything else to do? The MAX temp during the 9+ hours was 70C- should be ok??SAM and GARY- where are you ;) ?Best-Carl F. Increase in the smallest increment, test prime95 for an hour, then inrease some more if stable. 70 degrees is getting a bit hot but the CPU can handle it, anyway your CPU won't be running 100% all the time so so far so good. When finding a stable 1 hr prime95 Vcore with acceptable temp, you can start testing for longer-term stability. 8500... I guess that's a 9.5 multiplier so you would be running ~421 FSB. That should not require fiddling too much with CPU PLL and NB / FSB voltages. Getting a stable 4.0 OC with a 45nm should be a breeze - what are you using for cooling?EDIT: see you've got a tunic tower (1st post, sorry ;) ) that should provide you with some nice OC headroom, especially with a 45nm. Well, OC is about tweaking, tweaking and then some more tweaking. Don't give up until it's stable and you've got it where you want it. I've been tweaking my system for months now but I am VERY happy once it is stable at a good OC. Have fun and good luck!

Thanks- I did raise to 1.43125 and so far so good- solid 4.0ghz- FS9 is silk- even in taxi turns at EGLL which have been my nemesis so far :).Will now start another Prime95 run and report back. 70 was the absolute hottest it ever got- 63-65 mostly- so I'm hoping that's ok. Everything I've read recently says that Intel's temp monitors throttle back to prevent damage- so at 70- without any throttling- I ought to have been ok. As you said, its only the absolute peak- 99% of the time its 65C or lower- keep your fingers crossed!I even ran FSX with the RealAir SF260- super! I'm pretty happy with this upgrade- I notice a definite improvement in the fluidity from the e6850- placebo or not- I like it! Stay tuned, another 24hrs and there ought to be a e6850 available in the swap shop- cheap ;).Best-Carl F. Avari-Cooper BAW0225http://online.vatsimindicators.net/980091/523.png

Yes CPU will throttle back automatically if it overheats. If the temp spikes up to dangerous levels, system will auto-shutdown. I run my quad at 4050 in FSX even though it isnt prime95 stable, as FSX does not stress the system 100% ALL the time. In that way, I gain a further 225 MHZ over the 3825 prime95 stable.Your biggest enemy will likely be heat but you've got some decent air cooling there so it's looking promising!

Reading this with interest. I was contemplating a change to the E8500 at around 4.2Ghz with an expectation that fps would increase as least as much as the overclock of the E6700 from standard to 3.3 Ghz. Seems this is not the case though.

I am running my E6600 at 3.33Ghz, which gives me about 27% performance boost between stock and overclocked.I have been tinkering with the idea of getting a E8500 on the same board (P5B Deluxe), and trying to reach 4.1-4.2Ghz.But if I am looking at below 30% increase, then I don't think it's really worth it.You think one would get more than 30% performance increase?

Ok- looking good at FSB 421 (x9.5) and CPU at 1.43750v- Prime95 stable for a couple of hours now- Core 0 -hottest at 67C, mostly 60C and Core 1 hottest at 70C, mostly at 65C.The default is 3.16ghz and this OC is at 3.9999ghz- I make that a 26% OC- is my math correct? The difference between my e6850 (that I ran OC'd to 3.6) and the e8500 is noticable in smoothness and feel- my FPS were locked at 48 before- non issue there. Are my VOLTAGES and TEMPS ok- am I correct that 1.46v is the most that the e8500 is rated for? I have seen SEVERAL OCs over that but I run air not phase change :(Also- my core temps were closer with the e6850- there is a 5 degree spread here in the e8500.......??My TJ Dist to Max at 45 and 40 seem ok.......??ALSO NOTE- CPUZ says core 1.376V and BIOS is providing 1.4375- is this the vdroop- or is it the notorious reporting error??Thanks!Best-Carl F. Yes, looks like you are pretty much safe. Nice OC for aircooling, though I must be honest, I expected more. Something in lines of 4,1 4,2...Maybe you can find some help here:http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/240001...ads-duals-guideI missed, what mainboard are you using? Maybe a vdroop mode would be possible? It sank the temperature for my E6600. All I needed to do was a simple pencil vdroop-mod.

Ok...I am now TOTALLY BUMMED OUT! I am getting those figures on a single core P4 3.4.I was getting so excited about the prospect of 25-35 FPS with an E8500 or high-end quad.Now..totally bummed out.I'm going to pull my purchase and wait until FSXI comes out and see what everybody with the E8500's and Quads are pulling with that release.:(Mitch
