FSX and Windows 7?

Recommended Posts

Nick, great idea, but how do you do that?Given that the OS in which you installed FSX has the registry entries, how do you make the same FSX run on another OS, in a different partition or drive, without installing it there also?John
Sorry to ressurect such an old thread, but was searching for something else and noticed this question, and thought I would answer it :->FSX, in and of itself, doesn't actually need any of the registry entries (although it will create several at runtime). Most of the registry entries are there for use by third party installers and the Windows Uninstaller. There might be a couple, that if they exist, cause an extra directory to be added to some search list, but the code will run without them :->Running as Nick does will mean he is running under Demo mode (ie with the time limit), but that's probably fine for testing purposes. One thing you will have to take care of, is that none of the prereqs that FSX requires will be installed (since you didn't run the installer), so you would need to make sure things like MSXML4, DirectX runtime, etc are installed.Tim

Tim is correct.. I only use one OS (XP x64) to fly on a regular basis. The others are only for testing changes with addons, drivers and OS updates.. nothing more, so the primary install of FSX is the registered unlimited version but it will only operate in demo mode from the other OS boots.

So has anyone else tried it on RC 7100 ?I am experiencing mixed results with my GTX285 + 185.85 WHQL. Generally good fps (30's to 50's) but annoying stutters/pauses. Plus black squares popping in and out on ground tiles and other artifacts. Zero blurries though.Wondering if it's hardware, drivers or OS. Too early to tell yet, maybe it will sort itself out.

I also have a GTX285 and everything is fine with Win 7 RC, but I use the drivers which came with Win 7 RC (or were downloaded automatically).I also noticed that with the PMDG MD-11 I seem to get fewer black / disappearing texture problems under Win 7 than before - but contrary to my initial belief it is not a complete "fix" for this problem.Tim

I just installed Win 7 RC from an old beta ive been using from a few months ago (7000, I think). Unfortunatly, It told me while trying to upgrade, that I could not do the upgrade from an earlier ver of Win 7 ,only Vista. So I had to let it do a complete re-install. Now I have to re install FSX and all my addons (Bummer!). I don't know why it couldnt just do an update. I hope this is not the case again when the retail ver comes out. I would have stayed with the version I had, but it expires in Aug I think, and from what I read, the retail ver wont be out untill just before the holidays. Anyhow, I love Win 7. Just wish I didnt have to reinstall everything. I just bought the captain sim 757 tonight and havent even flown it yet. Oh well, let me get back to work installing!Rob

I believe the only upgrade for Win 7 is from Vista, ie, no upgrade from any beta even rc or from XP

Err, yes there is. I've just successfully installed the RC over the beta and kept every program intact. It's a shame you didn't google it.It's a very simple process -http://windows7news.com/2009/04/09/windows...e-instructions/

I have just tried it on windows 7 64 bit Vs. Vista 64 bitFSXTraffic X at 69%PMDG 747Sliders all at max except aircraft at high and secenry density at highAt heathrow on PMDG approx 13 fps on VC, this compares to about 14fps on Vistaie., there certianly no improvement in performance. and the graphics are a lot worse compared to Vista, this may be due to the Nivdia driver. On vista its running 181.20 on windows7 I have add to install 185.xxBoth set at override antialising, set at x4krishan

I've been using it (64 bit) since the week it came out... with the new 9.5 WHQL Catalyst performance is right at the levels I was seeing in XP. MS got it right this time I think, really like the OS as a whole.

Im getting random freezes with FSX and RC7100. Not CTD, not a memory issue. Just stops responding.

I've been running RC7100 and the stability has been phenominal - I havn't had one CTD during flying yet, and I'm able to freely Alt-Tab and even multitask.Only odd thing I get is a constant CTD when I exit FSX - but it doesn't seem to present any negative effect.
