Problems 737NG

Featured Replies

I just purchase the FS 9 737NG 600-700. The first issue is a rather a serious one. I tried to fly my first flight last after I installed it. Initially after takeoff, the aircraft oscillate between -1400 to +1400 fpm vertical speed. After a few minutes, it pitched nose up and attained a 90 degree pitch up. Needless to say, it's unflyable in that attitude. The second is more of an annoyance. The fonts on the MCP are almost unreadable. The "4" looks like a "9", the "0" appear to be square blocks, etc. Do I need to install a different font? Is it screen resolution, on a setup step I'm missing. Thanks for any help you can provide.Jim Angel

Although it may not be the case here, a first flight problem in climb begs to question the pilot's ability and you didn't give us much to go on to rule that out. Were you using VNAV and A/T? Were you experiencing the ever-present wind shifts cause by the fs wx engine? As for the fonts, maybe a screen shot would be helpful. I cannot recall precisely, but I think the 737 CDU display uses a system font. One of the moderators can jump in and help here but please don't wait for them and go ahead and show us with the screen shot.

First, when replying to someone's request for help, it's a waste of time to imply the person is incompetent. In response to your query, I have over 35+ in various airplanes but fighters to the 747, plus I have just about that much experience in computers...my first was an Apple IIe. To answer your question, VNAV would not activate, nor AT arm. The autopilot tried to maintain flight, but at about 50 degrees pitch up it disconnected. No matter what input I used via joystick or keyboard could I adjust the pitch angle. I understand what the winds can do in flight, but to get the flight attitudes I was getting it would have had to be a force 5 hurricane.I have read about loading the cessna first. I don't get the connection, but I'll try that tonight. I'll post the screen shot of the MCP later tonight.

Set up a parked clear weather theme flight with a default FS bird such as the Baron or other. This works for me eliminating the need to load a default aircraft each time as your default flight initializes the FS engine during the menu display. With the 737 I'd check out weight and balance carefully including fuel loading.Insure your FD is enabled as well as your AT. Check out your overhead electrics and hydraulics. In general you need to follow in sequence the checklists provided including the FMC. Make sure your cost index (80 is a good number) is set. I also suggest a spot view "walk around" to insure your control surfaces are in the correct position and nothing is hanging open.Until this is straightened out I'd use the clear weather theme without any weather add-on running.I believe one item that can cause your problem is initial trim out of range for your load conditions. Also, did you note N1 thrust during these difficulties?

The AT not arming sound like you might have forgotten to turn on the Engine Generators, but I'm not a techie, so I wouldn't be too much help. For the fonts, simply increase the screen size inside FS. I had mine at 800x600x32, and had the same issue. I increased it to 1024x768x32 and everything became readable.Hope that helps!Chris

Jim,The second rule in replying to someones attempt to help is to be polite. Dan was simply trying to help you with a problem you posted and did not adequately describe. If you want help with a problem, be polite. You would be suprised how many people post items that are caused by a complete lack of understanding of the aircraft. In regards to the MCP Digits. Check your Windows font size, I suspect it is set to LARGE and not NORMAL (96DPI). Changing it to the 96 DPI setting should correct the problem. If you were unable to arm or engage the A/T, you have failed to complete the normal checklist after firing up the aircraft. We provide an extensive manual with the product including a full set of checklists and I suspect that when you take a look at the overhead panel, you will see that the Left and Right generators are not connected to the bus. Without the Autothrottle, the A/P will have an extremely difficult time trying to predict pitch and can cause the type of behavior you describe. Please take a run through the entire normal checklist and see if the problem is corrected.

Another problem with the flight dynamics could be conflits between addon controllers, e.g. yoke, tq, pedals, etc. You didn't say if you had FSUIPC or not (reg ver), but if controllers are assigned in both FSUIPC and the default assignments page, this would cause erratic flight behavior. I assign all flight control functions using FSUIPC and assure myself that there are no assignments in the assignment page of FS. Panel functions such as the MCP, ND, PFD, Glareshield are assigned using the assignment options that come with the 737. Jim D.

We have seen on these forums quite a few folks claiming to be airline captains who never actually had a single hour behind aircraft controls. If someone who flew that much claims he can't control this 737's pitch - unless it is installation/computer/joystick related I am beginning to have my suspicions, sorry. :(
