Voice Recognition Software

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a voice recognition software that will work with Vista? Preferably freeware or open, but payware as well.I was using VAC - Voice Activated Commands, to communicate with my wingmen in IL-2, but the trial expired, so I'm looking for a replacement. I already tried Shoot, but it doesn't seem to work with Vista and the project looks abandoned so no updates can be expected.

There's a million of them: Multi Crew, IYP, Vox ATC for ATC, Cockpit Chatter by Flight1.The next version of FS2Crew (almost ready) will use voice command speech recognition. So you've got a very large selection of prospective choices.Everyone is different, so it's just matter of what suites your particular tastes.Cheers,

Vista does actually have built-in voice control, you could use that if you wanted it for IL-2, although a lot of gamers and simmers recommend 'Roger Wilco' for its easy interface, so you might want to give that a try:Info on it here as well as a link to download the shareware version: http://rogerwilco.gamespy.com/products/rw/faq.htmlAl

Of course Roger Wilco. Can't believe I'd forgotten about that one. Thanks for the tip.Vista does indeed have a voice recognition engine, but afaik it doesn't have an option to set your own commands, which makes it rather unusable in gaming.@byork: Yes, but unless I'm very much mistaken, those are all MSFS specific. I'm looking for something more generic.edit: One more thing. As far as I know, programs like Roger Wilco make use of the native voice recognition engine present in Windows. Does anyone if RW is going to be compatible with Vista? The whole project smells of abandonware. In any case, I'll give it a shot later on.edit2: Actually it just occurred to me. Roger Wilco is a VoIP app, not a voice recognition software, no?

Yup. Sorry, I thought you meant mainly for 'real' wingmen online with IL-2 such as with Teamspeak etc, so in the case of AI wingmen, you might want to try this one, which will let you assign voice commands for the app:http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Au...Commander.shtmlIt's free for 3 days and then 29 dollars for the full version. Don't have it myself, but it is supposedly very good, and I guess you can find out if it is with the free trial.Al

HelloVoice Buddy (edimensional) have a Vista version in beta at the moment

I'm not a very big fan of buddy voice myself. I find the command editor needlessly complicated. It seems I might be purchasing VAC after all. It's only 18$ and both the site and the product seem to be receiving frequent upgrades. I've also tested it with Vista 64bit and it works perfectly.

I used Voice buddy a long time ago. When you take the time (immense amounts of it) to set it up correctly, it *can* work well. That being said, it can really be an irritatingly uncooperative program. I guess that's the nature of voice recognition software, though. IMHO.

I wouldn't say that. VAC is exceptionally easy to set up. All you need to do is write a simple .xml file, that contains the words to the spoken and the intended keypress and that's pretty much it. Also it contains a rather friendly GUI based editor, that can write the .xml for you. Imo, from the limited look I had at it, the problems for Voice Buddy start, because it tries to automatically identify the program running and load the appropriate profile, thus forcing you to enter additional details to help the identification process. In VAC you choose the profile to be loaded manually and the procedure is much simpler.

To be fair, I never tried VAC. Might have to, now.
So far it has worked nicely for me and, on that account, I recommend it.
