Departure Flow Question (Noobish)

Featured Replies

Hello guys,Im not sure it's completely realistic (please rectify my way of thought of it is), but i kind of like to manually take up the plane to about 4000 and activate Profile navigain once im level. The thing is, when i press autopilot during roll the i get T/O thrust also during the initial climb. my question is if it's possible to only allow the Autopilot to maintain a certain speed and not take over the NAV nor climb phase of the departure ?Thanks in advance.Paul Glinston
If I've understood you correctly, you seem to have been doing nearly the right thing for what you want. The clue to understanding what's going on is to appreciate that autopilot is not the same as autothrottle, although in the MD-11 they are entwined in a way which is confusing when coming from the Boeing models. In particular, the Autoflight button is (at least) dual-function. It is used (i) at first, to engage the autothrottle; and (ii) secondly, to engage the autopilot.Let me talk you through this. In the MD-11, the first "click" on the Autoflight button, while you're still on the ground, only engages the autothrottle. By default, this will keep the throttles in take off thrust for the initial climb - but you can override this once you're in the air by pulling on the speed knob which is what I think you eventually did in the video towards the end (note that the annunciation changed from "Pitch" to "Thrust" mode when you right-clicked the speed knob). Provided you do not click the Autoflight button again, you will continue to have autothrottle at your disposal, without any other automatic pilot functions. This means that you can command the autothrottle using FMS or the speed knob, as you please. When you are ready to engage the automatic pilot you need to click Autoflight again. The effect this has will depend on whether or not you have previously "armed" particular autopilot modes. For example, if you have armed the NAV and PROF modes, the second click of the Autoflight button will engage those modes. If when you click Autoflight a second time you have not already "armed" a different mode, the roll controller will default to heading hold and the pitch controller will default to altitude hold.Sorry if I've misunderstood your problem (and/or for any solecisms in the foregoing).Tim

I am twice Alexander's age, does that make me twice as clueless? And since you think you are twice as smart as him, would that make you half his age? I will offer one final piece of advice, find a new hobby.

Please, lets not escalate this.A few days ago I wrote about how civilised this forum is. gtlos made the choice to reject my offer for help. I am perfectly comfortable with that.Lets just leave it at that.

Understandably - but on the other hand, the answers to these questions are sometimes valuable for people apart from the questioner. We don't always fully appreciate how we will come across to others when we hit that "send" button. Injudicious choice of words as well as flashes of humour or temper, have a tendency to leave unpleasant traces. Anyway, that's my excuse for writing such dull posts, and trying to ignore some of the immoderate outbursts one occasionally encounters.Tim
