Flying while flying?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if its aloud, and possible to set your plane up at the same gate as a realworld plane you are on and fly it during ur flightIs there a place where you can get the flightplan/speeds/altitudes, headings ect that you could use to take off and land and fly the same as the aircraft you are inside?Next year Im going to New York and want to bring a laptop on and try it?

The main problem you would have is that you can't use your laptop during takeoff/landing, so you would have to start behind the actual flight (about 20-30 minutes probably) - plus, there's the whole "will your laptop batteries last that long" issue - not to mention the "make everyone else on the flight nervous" factor :->As to routes/timetables/etc, I believe those can be found (I believe that is how some/most of the VA's operate, they use real world flights/routes/etc), but personally have no idea where you would find the info.Tim

mabey if i fly the takeoff in the terminal and save the flight at cruise?

I used my Garmin 276C on a recent flight and it showed 850 kms/h and an altitude of FL410. That was neat to watch. Started right at the ground and ended back on the ground. I had to sit in a window seat or the GPS would not pick up satelites. Landing was at 130 knots ground speed. Must have been close though. Plane was a 737NG.

most business class/first class offer power plugs now. I've actually "flown" FS9 while inside a tubeliner....feels really weird! :( Some airlines even have video in, so you can output your laptop to the screen! It's pretty neat.... tho taking out the joystick will make everyone around you do a double take...here's a pic of what that setup looks like on Singapore airlines...SIA.jpg-feng

I guess if you really wanted to do it you'd also need an aviation band receiver. You'd need to know the intial ground/tower and departure frequencies beforehand. you can get the other frequencies when the controllers hand off the flight to the next controller. The filed flight plan you could get from flightware, so you can load your flight computer - but depending on where you are going, some flights never follow the filed flight plan, others do. you have no way of knowing. The actual clearance your flight is issued prior to departure you'll need to listen via the clearance delivery frequency if they even use it - Out of New York they'd most likely get it via ACARs so you have no idea what they're putting in the actual flight computer. If you're really bold you could try to impersonate the flight crew and talk to the CD controller yourself to get the clearance and squawk.

That's usually a good thing :)

Maybe a little different wavelength-but it occured to me years ago with gpsout that one could put a laptop in a GA plane and drive gpsout with real time gps output and get a pretty good though not "reliable" taws display. Now there is so much software that does this not needed anymore-but I doubt the technology for doing the "legit" is all that different-though their software people jumped thru hoopes for certification for sure.
