FS9 'crashes' near Seattle

Featured Replies

The name rings a bell. Is it the Australian scenery? I did have it for a while but uninstalled it as it wasn't possible to install for the whole of Oz. Is that known to cause problems thousands of miles from the area it covers?
Some of the earlier versions of VOZ accidentally included some files for Bear Gulch, which was part of the RealAir Scout payware package. Uninstalling VOZ might have left some of these files in Addon Scenery\scenery.I don't remember the identifier for Bear Gulch, but the files all included it, if I remember correctly.I say all this because Bear Gulch is pretty much smack dab in the middle of your box in the post above.Hope this helps,Joe

Ray,In Process Monitor, look for anything that says "NAME NOT FOUND" along with a *.bmp associated with it. That would be your missing texture that will cause a CTD. I've had it a few times in Southern California and traced it to a missing road texture using Process Monitor. No more CTD after fixing the problem!! ;)If it isn't a missing texture, the last loaded *.bmp file will be the corrupted file causing the crash. This helps finding a bad AI texture (in most cases).
Hi Devin,PROBLEM IDENTIFIED! :( Thanks for that tip. I filtered on "NAME NOT FOUND" and there were loads of entries for Ultimate Terrain USA saying it couldn't locate a CAB file in FS9\Scenery\UTUSA\Texture folder. I don't have that folder. I do have a UTUSA\Scenery one though. So to test this I disabled that layer, exited FS and restarted so the indexes would be rebuilt. I was able to fly way into that area and FS9 did not crash. Just to confirm things I saved my flight, enabled UTUSA again and restarted. I loaded the flight I saved and FS crashed before it could finish loading. So that confirms UT-USA is the problem. If anyone has it can they please confirm the UTUSA folder has a Scenery and Texture folders please?Reinstalling could be tricky as there are no Registry entries to assist with an uninstall. I may just install again. I don't think it will cause any problems.Process Monitor is a great program for problems like this. You just need some help working out what it's reporting and once again a fellow-member has come up trumps! Have a beer on me Devin! :(

Thanks Joe. As you can see I have identified UT-USA as the culprit.

So that confirms UT-USA is the problem. If anyone has it can they please confirm the UTUSA folder has a Scenery and Texture folders please?
Mine just has a Scenery folder No Texture.

Mine just has a Scenery folder No Texture.
Thanks. I wonder why FS9 is expecting a Texture folder? I'll still go ahead with the reinstall I think. There may be bad registry entries and / or bad file(s).

Ray I'm finding some interesting data in which I'm reporting in this thread:'Constant NYC CTD, anyone else seeing this?'It may be worth a look for you in helping figure this one out...

FS2020

Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

Hey Ray.If you're still interested in getting hold of a copy of Filemon, here is a link.I just downloaded.http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filemon.htmlI have never used it before myself, but I'm going to check out my FS install as well.I have had a few FE.DLL errors myself and wonder if this program might help in identifying the offending culprit.

Hi Dillon and Steve,Thanks for the pointer to that thread Dillon. I had a read through but that problem seems to be linked to Ai whereas mine is definitely texture related. It is very frustrating for you so good luck in working the problem through.Steve, I've identified the problem using PM but unfortunately even after reinstalling UT-USA I'm still getting the crash. More bizarrely PM is reporting that FS2004\Scenery\UTUSA\Texture and the CAB file is missing. Another user has already confirmed there isn't a Texture folder under UTUSA so I'm wondering where FS9 is getting that info from. I've checked the Registry and it's not there so I'm a bit stumped.I'll post a question to Flight1 I think.

I don't quite understand why it is reporting a cab file as missing as the only use of these in Flight Simulator is:i) installation packages with the relevant files within for extractionii) gauges for aircraft cockpits. There are several upgrades for Ultimate Terrain USA listed at http://www.scenerysolutions.com/Downloads.html which may be of interest if you don't already have them.John

Hi Ray,I forgot to tell you about that... :( The reason that MSFS looks for a CAB files is because it is missing the texture. It first looks for the texture bitmap. If it is missing, it then looks for the same texture in a CAB file, which in 99.99% of all cases does not exist. So, there is no problem with what you are seeing. See my example below:57:24.1 fs9.exe 8200 QueryOpen D:\FS9\Scenery\Name\texture\LIGHTGRAVELROOF.BMP NAME NOT FOUND 57:24.1 fs9.exe 8200 QueryOpen D:\FS9\Scenery\Name\TEXTURE.CAB NAME NOT FOUND What you want to do is look at the line above that CAB line...that will be your problem (in my case it was the "lightgravelroof.bmp" that caused my CTD). I found a texture that would replace that texture and put it in the above texture folder, and voila, no more CTD!Hope this helps.Devin

Hi Devin,Thanks for the clarification. However, I'm still struggling to identify missing files in the UTUSA\Texture folder. Probably because it doesn't exist! :( Is there a way to export the filtered contents of Process Monitor to a text file so I can show you what it is reporting? It's a bit of a horror show to be honest but I'm sure most missing objects are not critical. But clearly all is not well around Seattle.I'm going to think about what to do. The area affected is so small and I hardly ever fly there any way I'm thinking I may just forget this for now. I've posted on Flight1 so I'll see what they say.

Thanks John. I'm up to date with UT-USA and none of the other files appear to offer a solution to my problem. The CAB file issue is resolved by Devin.

Hi Devin,I worked out how to export the filtered report. But I can only upload it as a plain text file.If you can import it into Excel and use AutoFilter you can see more easily all the different errors. I'll see if I can find some of those missing texture files.

Hi Ray,From what I can see in your file, these are the BMPs that are missing...the directories you can find in your file, I just named the BMPs. If any of these are missing, the sim will crash as you have experienced.WINDSOCK.BMPRAS_DOCK.BMPRAS_TREESTANDWI.BMPRAS_HSE1.BMPRAS_HSE2.BMPRAS-DARKWOOD.BMPRAS_BRN1.BMPRAS_TRUCK.BMPRAS_BRN2.BMPRAS-PALETT.BMPRAS-RUST.BMPRAS-TIRETIEDOWN.BMP000333300033301Wi.bmpl_tanrock_ns.bmpWhenever a texture was missing, I did a hard drive search to see if the offending file was in another directory. Google searches were almost futile. Sometimes you'll run accross a similar type of texture on your drive. What I did with those is I made a copy, put it in the folder where the missing texture should be, and renamed the copy to the name that MSFS was searching for.As for the F:\FS2004\Scenery\UTUSA\TEXTURE, that is a mystery!! I don't have UT, so I can't confirm your findings. Its a pain in the backside, I know, but it's about the only thing I know of to resolve that problem.

One common denominator to all those bitmaps is RAS_*I'll bet dollars to donuts that stand for Real Air Scout.Try removing everything from your addon scenery\scenery folder that you are 100% sure you don't need to fly in that area and do a test flight. This was a known issue a few years ago that those rogue files in the VOZ install could trash parts of the Pacific Northwest.I'm not here to slam VOZ, personally I love it. Just trying to help,Joe

Just a personal thank you for clarifying that one Devin.John
