December 28, 200916 yr hey, so I downloaded a whole bunch of AFCAD files from the file library (from Ray Smith), and installed them according to the readme instructions - pretty simple - most of the bgl files go in the addon scenery/scenery folder. So I fire up KABQ, and the parking is messed up once it parked me in the middle of the taxiway, the other time in the middle of the terminal. What's strange is that there are no other kabq.bgl files that I can find anywhere (I used the airport scanner) - definitely no others in that directory. I haven't tried any of the other airports, but thought i'd see if anyone had any thoughts.thx!
December 28, 200916 yr First thing to do is get those AFCADs out of the Addon Scenery\Scenery folder. Never use the Addon Scenery folder in FSX for ANYTHING. Leave it empty, or eventually you are going to regret it.Second thing to do is read the below thread. It contains numerous tutorials I wrote about how to add scenery to FSX. It was recognized by Phil Taylor and he added it to his blog. It was also added to the AVSIM Tutorial library section. It contains several posts I made about how to effectively add AFCADs (and other scenery) to FSX so you don't get the kind of problems you are experienceing.http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=67367&hl=FalconAF Rick Ryan
December 28, 200916 yr If you are using FS9 AFCADS in FSX you will run into trouble, as the runways may be at the wrog location, height, and even have the wrong codes. The fs9 ones are a little different to the fsx ones.
December 28, 200916 yr You, sir, are a genius! Thanks SO much...just read through the thread. All makes sense.Quick question though...some of the airports are single file bgls, so with those I'll create my own folder outside of FSX and add them through the scenery library. Some though, also have object bgl files, and the developer stated they needed to go into the FSX/scenery/global/scenery folder, so I just copied them there. Is that OK? Or do I also put the objects in a separate folder, and add through the library?

Or do I also put the objects in a separate folder, and add through the library?1. Get those "other" Object BGL files out of the Global scenery folder. If you ever want to uninstall the AFCAD they were designed for, you won't want to leave those object bgl files in there anymore anyhow.2. Create a SEPARATE folder for them like you did for the AFCADs. For instance, for Ray Smith's files that he recommends you place in the "scenery\global\scenery" folder, I created a separate folder outside of FSX called:AFCADs - Ray Smith Scenery_Global_Scenery Airport FilesCreate a SUBFOLDER under that called "scenery", and place all of Ray's Object BGL files in the scenery subfolder. NOW you can add that entire folder to the FSX Scenery Library, and move it wherever you want to in the priority list. I placed mine just ABOVE the "Global, Generic & Vehicle Libraries" entry in the Scenery Library (that is the "FSX\scenery\global\scenery" folder in FSX). I did the same thing for additional Library Objects that come with some of Patrick Finch's AFCADs...made a separate folder for his stuff and put it just above Ray Smith's entry I made. The key is to try to avoid whenever possible adding ANYTHING to a default FSX "scenery" folder if you can avoid it. Create separate folders for them, then add them to the Scenery Library yourself. That way, you can always enable or disable the scenery using the "check boxes" in the FSX Scenery Library. Plus, if I ever want to uninstall anything, I can just delete (or actually just disable, in case I might want to use it again later) the Scenery Library entry. No more "wondering" if I got rid of all the files in any DEFAULT FSX folders that I may have just "dumped" the files into.Rick Rick Ryan
December 28, 200916 yr Rick/FalconAF put a lot of work into that thread, it should be stickied.scott s..

In this short thread, Jon confirms that the _cvx.bgl and _Obj.bgl files should always be colocated with the respective AFCAD.bgl file (not elsewhere). Regards, Al Jordan | KCAE

In this short thread, Jon confirms that the _cvx.bgl and _Obj.bgl files should always be colocated with the respective AFCAD.bgl file (not elsewhere).Never knew that before. Thanks for the heads-up. The post is a little confusing though when compared with your statement above. If I am reading the post right, it sounds like the _cvx.bgl and _Obj.bgl files should go with the AFCAD in FSX only. If the AFCAD was designed for FS9, you would still need to put them in different places. Is that correct?I'm curious now, because even though I've been doing it the way I described in my post above for FSX, I haven't experienced any problems with any airport AFCADs designed for FSX with ADE, or AFX for that matter. December 28, 200916 yr What would be really great is if the AFCAD folks could all use the same "instructions" (FS9/FSX) for us who do not understand all this scenery stuff!Or a choice ... the old way ... addon scenery etc put'em here ...And the better way ..... like this: etc and the steps.Just a quick read of the responses in this topic leave me wondering if the people who "know" what to do still have some question about specific aspects of it themselves???Easy for me to get completely lost. December 28, 200916 yr The problem is many people have developed their own schemes over the years, and if you are a developer, the problem is how much detail to go into in discussing installation. In most cases I don't think there is a single, "correct" answer; every setup is bound to have its own little quirks.scott s..
December 28, 200916 yr Agree with that 100% Most "addon developers", whether freeware or payware, realistically have to design their addon for a "default" FSX installation. It would be impossible for a developer to create an addon that would "play nice" with every other addon that is available for FSX (or FS9).But how many of us are really using a "default" FS installation? I would guess...NOBODY. :( Rick Ryan
December 29, 200916 yr Rick - so, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I took the files out of the FSX folders, and placed them elsewhere (outside of the FSX dir). When I go into the scenery library, click on Add Area, and then navigate to the folders where the bgl's are located, it's not recognizing the files that are in the folder. I double click on the folder, and it says no files match your search (or something like that). When I try to just add the folder, by typing in the folder name, it goes into that folder with no files. But the files are definitely there...

December 29, 200916 yr There is a known 'bug' in the system. After selecting the folder you want to Add, right-click anywhere within the menu's area and it will be added...Or even easier (at least this is the way it works on my computer), select the folder that is one level ABOVE the one you would normally select in FS9. When I do this in my FSX "add scenery" window, the "Scenery Area Title" then appears in the box on the bottom, and you can click the "OK" button. The area will then get added to the Scenery Library. For some reason, FSX likes you to select the folder ONE LEVEL HIGHER than FS9 did. I have never had to "right click in the menu area" to get a scenery area added using the above method. Rick Ryan
