How much memory?

Featured Replies

I am about to purchase a new computer. I thought that I remembered reading that FS9 had some sort of limitation for the maximum amount of memory that it could use without having an issue. So my question is how much memory should I purchase? Also I believe that FS9 has no troubles with Windows 7, am I correct? No matter the computer or operating system I plan to stay with FS9 because of my investment in the product.ThanksTom

A 32bit OS will only see a little over 3GB so anything more than 3GB on 32bit OS is waste of money. It is limited to seeing 3.2GB I think.A 64bit OS however can take as much as the mobo can take. More is always better but I would start with a minimum of 4GB on a 64bit system. As for Windows 7 I have no idea. They do have a dedicated W7 forum here on AVSIM. (see the sticky at the top).

Hi,I have 1GB with XP Home and have NEVER maxed out my memory with FS04 and a ton of add-ons.Any modern system with between 1-2GB will be fine.

If you use an intel i7 processor and a 64-bit OS, go with 6GB to take advantage of the triple-channel RAM capability of the CPU. For other CPUs and/or a 32-bit OS, 4GB should be fine. Why anyone would build a new PC with a 32-bit OS now I don't know, though. As shipped, FS9 can operate within a maximum address space of 2GB unless the FS9.exe executable is modded to set the LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag. Once the executable is thus modded FS9 can be allocated up to 4GB with a 64-bit OS or 2-3 GB with both a 32-bit OS and 4-gigabyte tuning enabled (i.e. using the /3GB switch in XP or Vista32 boot.ini file)A complex add-on in a complex scenery with HD clouds can easily cause FS9 to exceed the 2GB default maximum allocation, and cause a fatal OOM error. Lots already written in these forums if you do a search for "OOM" or "out of memory".RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

I agree that MB max RAM limitations will probably be the limiting factor for 64 bit OS, but just for clarity different SKUs of Windows 7 have limits as follows:Win 7 Starter 2GbWin 7 Home Basic 8GbWin 7 Home Premium 16GbWin 7 Pro/Ultimate 192Gb Obviously for most of us the Home Premium 16Gb should suffice for a while :)scott s..

I wonder what the last one in the list would ru n like.Would we actualy see any difference in Win 7 with all that RAM ?Thanks.

Steve.

Unlike the British Government, I actually Learn from my Mistakes..........

Windows XP Professional SP3, ABIT IC7 MAX3 MotherBoard, Intel P4 3.40GHz HT, 4Gigs RAM, Hercules Digifire Sound Card, Geforce 7800GS 512RAM Graphics Card, FS9.1, REX, ASv6.5, GE pro.FE.

First, you have to find a motherboard that could support 192Gb. That would probably be intended for servers so you wouldn't find much in the way of PCIe/ graphics support. It's hard to envision a desktop system that could make use of all that, even if every app you ran was 64 bit, though the idea of a 64 bit FSXI has a certain appeal. (Load the whole world into RAM? That's a treat!)scott s..
