PMDG Livery Contest!

Hi guys, Here is a pdf of the tutorial in it's exact current state as seen here on the forum. It was done for me by Brian of these forums. It is just like you see and the links work as they do in the tutorial so there isn't reference to a picture (ie. See Picture 1.1) in the pdf that you might want to see in a finished pdf. This is pretty much done exactly like William stated. It is printable and may not be what people want to see in a finished pdf since it will still require internet access to view the links provided.I won't be able to revise the tutorial for every different version of PS or equal program out there, but do want to note at least key differences to CS4 since it will be that, that newcomers will be using if using the trial version mentioned. This is another reason why I prefer the forum, so we can gather all the differences in one place so they will be there for future use.I'm glad to see so many already getting ready to dust off their virtual paint brushes!

One other question, I assume for the 747 we can paint the -8, correct?
Hi Mark, Yes the -8 is an eligable and welcome paint. I didn't list it since I didn't want to put pressure on PMDG on releasing a kit but feel free to do one. I have it as well as other judges so it is fair game.
BTW- you mentioned getting feedback on the tutorial. For one I found it very useful. Since it 's based on Photoshop and I use PhotoX2 (aka PSP) there are a couple of areas where performing certain operations is significantly different e.g. alpha channel creation. I can jot down a few notes on how I accomplished this in the other package, if this helps round out the tutorial? I would be interested to see how others do this too.
Thanks Mark, I think the best thing I could ask of you (and anyone), is to toss anything they want to contribute in differences on the tutorial page. That way when I finally do a revision, I will have it all in one easy collective spot. Thanks for anything you want to contribute.

Hi Guys, i didn't know that inventing a completely livery is sooo much harder than repainting existing liveries :D i'm working on my livery for approx 8 hours now - and there is no end in sight ^^. Is someone else working on a livery for this contest? All the best from Austria, Alexander Roithmair

Best regards,

Hi Dylan,If Paint.Net can do layers, then I would say yes, based on Dan's (Turbine 777) comments prior.I believe freighters can be painted too! They are a valid part of the PMDG package so this is open game as fraa s I can tell. Dan mentioned -8i/8F were in scope.Cheers,

Paint.net can indeed do layers and in one or two respects it is superior to earlier versions of Photoshop for repainting as well, notably in the file formats it can support by default. It does also have the advantage of being free, whereas Photoshop is of course not free, although you can get a free 30 day trial version of Photoshop.I'd have a crack at this myself, but for two reasons; one, I'm on the Avsim staff, and two, I'm an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop and train people on it for a living, so I think that would make things a bit unfair! However, if anyone gets a bit stuck with Photoshop, it does mean you can PM me for help!Al

Hi Dylan, Sorry for the late reply but looks like you got some good answers. The only thing I would add to this is to make sure it can save as .dds. I doubt it will by default, and as with Photoshop you may need to download a plug-in. Also just to reiterate what Mark said, yes for cargo versions of course :(

I think the current version of Paint.net has native support for DDS files.Al

I guess I am going to attempt one. My first idea was a current airline but make a fictional paint for them.

How long does it take to upload to avsim?
Normally mine are uploaded within 24hrs. Sometimes a bit longer if I submit them on the weekend. Just make sure to classify it correctly and title it accordingly and that way it won't get shot back at ya.* Also just to toss this out there. Don't forget to put a read me with install instructions in your zip and a thumbnail.Always count on someone new to FS downloading your livery as their first ever addition to their virtual hangar. I remember the 1st I had. The directions actually said "Toss these files in your folder and make the necessary changes you want to your cfg". Haha, all I could think about was how bad I wanted to hurt that person :(

I always find it difficult to explain how to install repaints because for some reason people don't get it. I just said move the "folder" to the location(Of course I put the folder name and location) and then I added to put this line of text into the aircraft.cfg file and to make sure to change the "x"Looks like avsim hasn't quiet put up my file but once it does I will submit my final creation. Its a fictional paint for UAL.

I really like it, although I think you could make the logo a little bigger on the tail. Everything else looks great!David
